Lodging in Damascus:
Public camping is limited in Damascus.  Public camping is only allowed beside the public parking next to The Old Mill  (215 West Imboden St, right beside the river, on the other side of the parking lot from the Old Mill- camp here).  It is $5 per person, and the money should be either placed in the town's dropbox by the fire department or mailed to Town Hall (PO Box 576, Damascus, VA  24236).  There are toilets and showers at this location.

Private camping: In the past a local runner has allowed runners to camp in his yard for free.  His property was for sale (as of Dec 2017).  When it sells, this location will probably not be available for camping.  If it is available, the RD will email about it a few weeks before race day.

 2 Campgounds are located nearby.

Family Vacation- Labor Day Weekend
Tourism is a large industry in Damascus, and I encourage you to make this race weekend a family vacation.  Biking on the Virginia Creeper Trail is a fun activity, with many companies offering shuttles to the top of the trail with visitors biking back down to Damascus (http://www.vacreepertrail.com/).  Many hiking options exist in the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area (http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/gwj/mr/), including visiting the wild ponies in and around Grayson Highlands State Park (http://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state_parks/gra.shtml).
If you are more interested in the arts, you may enjoy the Barter Theatre (http://www.bartertheatre.com/), the State Theatre of Virginia.
