What is NICE STREAMS

NICE STREAMS (Neogene ice streams and sedimentary processes on high-latitude continental margins) was incorporated into the International Polar Year as Activity # 367.

Two coordinated research projects have participated in NICE STREAMS during IPY 2007-2009:

  • The development of an Arctic ice stream-dominated sedimentary system: The southern Svalbard continental margin (SVAIS), funded as Spanish IPY research program;
  • Evolution of a glacial Arctic continental margin: The southern Svalbard ice stream-dominated sedimentary system (EGLACOM), funded as OGS (Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale) contribution to IPY (Italy).
After the end of IPY, NICE STREAMS has continued with funding of the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (NICE STREAMS Spain 2009-2010) and with a Marie Curie Intra-European Fellowship between the University of Barcelona and the OGS (PLUMES).
Recently, two additional research projects have been funded: DEGLABAR (Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation), and MELSTROM (Programma Nazionale di Ricerche in Antartide).
Lastly, the CORIBAR Cruise of the R/V Maria S. Merian led by MARUM-University of Bremen has been launched.

To date, other research projects are being proposed to various funding agencies to follow up the findings of the original IPY NICE STREAMS Activity # 367
