Audition

If you are interested in auditioning to become a member of the University of Iowa Tuba/Euphonium Studio, you can find out basic information on this link. It is strongly encouraged that you contact Professor Manning in advance to schedule a complimentary lesson, visit the campus, and meet some of the students in the studio.

Undergraduates - All undergraduate applicants must do the following four things:
  1. Apply online to the University of Iowa
  2. Complete the online application to the School of Music
  3. Complete the Audition Registration Form
  4. Email Professor John Manning
The University of Iowa School of Music holds special audition days. This year, they are:

If you cannot attend the audition days, you may request a special audition date. Please contact Professor Manning if you would like to schedule an audition, or if you have any questions.

Graduate Students:

Graduate students must apply to the Graduate College and arrange an audition with Professor Manning. For detailed information about how to apply, visit the School of Music Graduate Admissions page.

There will be an opening for the Graduate Assistantship position for Fall 2015. All highly-qualified graduate applicants (Masters or DMA Candidates will be considered). To be eligible, all candidates must schedule a live audition for the brass faculty and submit a completed application, including transcripts, three letters of recommendation, and a statement of purpose. For questions regarding the assistantship, please email Professor Manning.

Audition Material:
Undergraduates should prepare at least one solo and/or etude and schedule a live audition with Professor Manning. No scales are required for auditions. Applicants should be prepared to play a short sight-reading example. Graduate students are expected to prepare at least two major solos from the standard repertoire, as well as at least 5 orchestral (tuba) or band (euphonium) excerpts. For music recommendations, please refer to the appropriate list of suggested audition literature below.
