An innovative response to a national concern

Problem

  • Globalization has facilitated the spread of species: aquatic animals may travel in the ballast water of ships, insects may dig into crates that travel around the world, ornamental plants beginning as exotic decoration may spread into the wild, and animals traded as exotic pets may escape or be released.

  • Executive Order 13112 defines invasive species as “an alien species whose introduction does or is likely to cause economic or environmental harm or harm to human health.”

Solution: The Invasive Hitlist series

  • The Invasive Hitlist is a series of field guides designed to create a culture of eco-positive recreation that benefits the ecosystem, rather than harming it.

  • Our aim is to widely distribute the booklets and raise awareness of the impacts of invasive species.

  • By incorporating ecological thinking into established practices, we aim to change attitudes in hunting communities and emphasize how easy and rewarding environmental consciousness can be.

  • The booklets are designed to appeal to a range of anglers and occasional sportsmen.

Who We Are

  • We are senior year students at Georgetown University in the Science in the Public Interest Program who have developed a booklet entitled The Invasive Hitlist: Snakehead.

  • We are working to reduce the impacts of invasive species nationally by acting locally.
