Human touch and gestures are naturally exploited as interact with other people, mobile devices, multimedia, or Virtual/Augmented Reality (VR/AR) contents.

Nowadays, multimodal computer interfaces that exploit touch input are radically changing how people interact with mobile devices, VR/AR or multimedia contents. These systems make it possible to augment the sensory abilities of users and to enable entirely new forms of user interaction. Our research goal is to establish innovative and interdisciplinary research in quantitative perception modeling and developing new technologies to advance the field of haptics.

Haptic Engineering Research Lab (HERL) at Incheon National University (INU, Songdo, Incheon, South Korea) was founded in 2016 and conducts various research projects including haptic rendering with deformable 3D models, touch perception on 3D textures and shapes,  realistic tactile feedback on mobile (smart phone or tablet) touch screens, wearable robots for rehabilitation, and wearable devices assisting the disabled, haptics assisted medical imaging systems, and brain machine interface for touch sensation. Current research projects are synthetic haptic signal generation and display for wearable devices, haptic soft-keyboard, haptics assisted skin palpation with human skin images, biophysical-signal(brain, muscle)-based tactile sensing and feedback for bionic arms, and haptic foot orthosis for rehabilitation, etc. HERL is always open to collaborative research across countries. 

For Prospective Graduate Students (PhD course only) and Postdoctoral  Researchers (International Applicants Only)

If you are interested in pursuing graduate studies (Direct PhD (MS-PhD), or PhD, No Master) at HERL, Korea, in the field of general haptics, image processing with haptic feedback, deformable 3D haptic rendering, haptics assisted human computer interface, virtual/augmented reality, wearable robotics with haptic feedback, brain machine interface, machine learning for tactile perception, or related areas, please send your CV (academic background with GPA (min. 3.5/4.5), work experience, publications, a list of contact information for references, computer programming skills, iBT (88) or IELTS (6.5) exam score) and a research statement (no more than 2 pages) to Prof. Kim (ktkim@inu.ac.kr). Accepted students will be provided with a stipend and scholarship to cover the tuition fee.  The application deadline for RA positions for Spring 2018 is Nov 15, 2017. Applications submitted after the deadline can be considered for Fall 2018 when RA positions are still available.
 For the postdoctoral researcher position (foreigners only), please send your application (CV, two representative papers, a list of contact information for references (min. 2), research statement(1-2 pages)) to ktkim@inu.ac.kr any time before Dec 22th every year. The official start date at our school is March 1st every year for one year term (renewable up to four years). 

For Prospective Graduate Students (Funded Dual PhD Program for Incheon National University, Korea and University of Paris 8 or 12, France)

A dual PhD (or Direct PhD) program is offered by University Paris 12 (UPEC) or 8, Paris, France and Incheon National University (INU), Incheon, Korea, in the field of rehabilitative robotics  with haptics , image processing with haptics, or brain signal based robot control in part of ongoing research projects. International students who are particularly interested in research collaboration across countries and want to be jointly supervised by both  professors at University of Paris and INU are encouraged to apply for this program. The candidates must be enrolled concurrently at both institutions for the PhD period (5 years in total: 3-5 years at INU and 1-2 years at University of Paris) and receives two doctoral degrees awarded by the two institutions. Accordingly, PhD candidates must meet graduation requirements at both institutions. All accepted students are provided with both a tuition waiver and a stipend at INU and University of Paris while they are studying at either institute. Financial support is subject to available funds at both institutes. If you are interested in this program, please send your CV (academic background, work experience, publications, a list of three contact information for references, computer programming skills, iBT (88) or IELTS (6.5) exam score), a research statement (no more than 2 pages), official transcript to Prof. Kim (ktkim@inu.ac.kr).
