The NOW now festival invited Diego to perform in Sydney. He proposed to work with Siân (as Internet) but as Sydney is very far away we proposed to write a piece and hire an actor to perform it at the festival. The organisers agreed and suggested, by email, that the musician and performer, Rishin Singh, could perform the piece. When they made this proposal, they CC-ed in Rishin too. Before replying to the festival organisers, Diego and Siân proposed to Rishin and Rosita Holmes, Rishin's ex girlfriend, the idea of writing a piece together based on a fictional love triangle between Diego, Rishin and Rosita. This lead Diego, Siân, Rishin and Rosita to script an email exchange, through which an argument developed over a period of three months. The festival organisers were cc-ed into the email exchange, without knowing that it had all been scripted. Occasionally they contributed to the conversation, meaning the scripted emails had to be adapted in response. The conversation ended with Diego cancelling the performance, after which we revealed to the festival organisers that the emails they had been receiving were collectively scripted, and told them our performance would consist of one of them reading the email exchange to the audience as a way of explaining the alleged performance cancellation. We prepared slides to accompany the reading, as a way to make it easier for the audience to follow.
