International Neighbors is an international student organization at California State University, Chico. Our main goal is to help new international students and connect them to the Chico community.
We have weekly meetings every Monday from 7 to 8:30 pm at the Selvester's Cafe on campus. This is a casual occasion where free coffee, tea and other snacks are provided, and everyone is welcome to drop-by, including American students and the local community. Please look at our Calendar of Events for the fun programs and trips we've roughly planned for this semester; there are plenty of cultural events and activities you might want to know about and be part of.
The group was founded in 1985 is Frank and Shirley Stenzel from Gridley. At that time, there were different clubs for the various nationalities of students, but not one that included all international students. While at the Urbana Missions Conference, Frank felt that he was being led to start this group. He was on staff with InterVarsity, so that is why InterVarsity, a Christian organization, has always sponsored IN.
Even though IN has supported by Christian organization since its establishment, it emphasis on treating any religions equally is succeeded through core members.
In the middle of 1980's, there was a conversation partner and friendship family program in which international students were paired with either American students or families. During those early years, the only time all of the students would get together was for the welcome potluck for student and friendship families. In the late 1980's IN started hosting an ice cream social during orientation.
After several years, the Moonlight Cafe format was started.
