Purpose: The investigators hypothesized the osteoinductive properties of PuraBone on bone regeneration. It is the nanocrystalline form of Puerarin being a phytoestrogen, derived from a wild leguminous creeper , Kudzu . This research was made to evaluate the effect of Purabone with PLATELET RICH FIBRIN (PRF) carrier as a graft material on bone regeneration after cyst enucleation in the mandible. Materials and Methods: Eighteen patients with mandibular cysts were included in the study. They were divided equally into 3 Groups. Group A (Study group) included patients grafted with 1cc of Purabone with Platelet Rich Fibrin carrier. Group B (Positive Control) included patients grafted with Platelet Rich Fibrin only. Group C (Negative Control) included patients with no graft (Control). Radiographic follow up was made using Digital Panoramic X ray at 0 and after 6 months. Follow up included measuring bone density changes and changes in height and width of cystic bone cavity after enucleation. Results: Panoramic Radiographic examination showed a statistical significant increase in bone density and decrease in cyst dimensions in the Study group than the Control Groups. Conclusions: It can be concluded that Purabone has an osteoinductive effect on bone regeneration.

Normal Neurotransmitter Release                      Exposure to Botulinum Toxin

Botulinum toxin is, also, called as “miracle poison,” and is one of the most poisonous biological substances known. (Münchau A. and Bhatia K.P., 2000) It is commercially available as purified exotoxin of anaerobic bacteria, Clostridium botulinum. Botulinum is a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, an aerobic, gram-positive, spore-forming rod commonly found on plants, water, in soil and the intestinal tracts of animals. The therapeutic use of botulinum toxin was discovered in the 1970s and has since been used in broad range of medical problems. Botulinum toxin is used in primary care setting to treat conditions such as allergic rhinitis, hyperhidrosis, lichen simplex chronicus, migraine, myo-fascial pain syndrome and certain task-specific idiopathic focal dystonias (eg. Writer’s cramp) more specific to cosmetic improvement of the face. Here we are presenting a short review on Botulinum toxin for a cosmetic purpose and their associated applications to the Maxillofacial region.

The surgical resection of the ankylotic mass remains the ultimate line of treatment for bony ankylosis. Resecting massive bone formations at the skull base in a distorted anatomic environment is difficult and runs the risks of life threatening complications. This complicates the uniform resection of the ankylotic mass and accordingly creating a uniform dimension gap. Computer-guided surgery (CGS) has not been a routine part of craniomaxillofacial surgery in bony ankylosis to date. This study investigates the use of Prefabricated computer guided cutting stent to promote the safe removal and uniform of ankylosed temporomandibular joint bone in the skull base. This study included 8 cases of temporomandibular ankylosis (7 unilateral and 1 bilateral). The patients underwent a surgical procedure of bony gap arthroplasty guided by a prefabricated cutting stent. It aided in a predetermined guiding the uniformity of the gap arthroplasty intraoperatively. The results showed that computer guided surgery resulted in an accurate presurgical determined osteotomies with subsequent safe and uniform surgical excision of the ankylotic mass. Conclusions: We regard Computer-guided release of an ankylosed temporomandibular joint as a valuable additional technique in creating a preplanned uniform gap yet the depth of resection still needs for studies to be made.

Denture induced verrucous hyperplasia is a rare clinical entity, which is soft, slow growing, long-term progressive soft tissue lesion and difficult to define. The etiology of Oral verrucous hyperplasia remains still unclear. Tobacco use does not seem to have a significant Influence on the appearance of Oral verrucous hyperplasia. These lesions may occur both in smokers and non-smokers. The purpose of the article is to present a case of denture induced verrucous hyperplasia in a patient who was continuously wearing denture for the past one year. The main reason behind this is entrapment of food debris and other substances beneath the denture which has become a source of continuous irritation which in turn caused verrucous hyperplasia. Verrucous hyperplasia which in turn not managed properly can lead to verrucous carcinoma.

Abstract

In Maxillofacial Trauma, condylar fractures are the most common with a high incidence among the mandibular fractures. Management of the condylar fractures always remained a source of ongoing controversy in oral and maxillofacial trauma. Condylar fractures can be intracapsular or extracapsular, displaced, undisplaced, deviated or dislocated. There are various factors which have remained the deciding for the treatment indicated including presence of teeth, status of occlusion, unilateral or bilateral fracture, age of the patient, level and displacement of fracture, co-existence of other maxillary or mandibular fracture and other form of fractures which are difficult to recover functionally and aesthetically. Most of the researchers favor closed reduction with maxillomandibular fixation, but in the recent era, open reduction with internal fixation has become the most common. To overcome this problem, we are presenting this review to ascertain the main variables that determine the choice of treatment and to appraise the current evidence regarding the effectiveness of the treatment.
