Abstract 

The radiation-induced instability of the genome in tobacco plants Nicotiana tabacum L. has been studied. An increase in the number of chromosomal aberrations in plants of generations M1 and M2 has been shown. The level of chromosomal aberrations depended on the dose of irradiation and the method of pollination of plants and there was carried out research antiradiation activity of an extract of sophora – Sоphora japonica L. at sharp gamma irradiation of seeds of tobacco and wheat. Preliminary processing of seeds with these preparations resulted in stabilization of the maintenance of pigments of chlorophylls and carotinoids at sprouts of wheat and to decrease in number of chromosomal aberrations in apical meristem of sprouts of tobacco – Nicotiаna tabacum L., obtained from the irradiated seeds. Thus, by testing the root meristem of tobacco in the yield parameter XA, we showed that pre-treatment of seeds with Sophora extract resulted in a significant decrease in the yield of XA in gamma irradiation, which indicates the presence of radioprotective and antimutagenic properties in this preparation.

Abstract 

Hereditary hemolytic anemias are one of the most widespread pathologies in the world and is also in Azerbaijan. Haemoglobinopathies - major and intermediate β-thalassemia, sickle cell anemia and of enzymopathy-deficiency enzyme glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase are the most frequently among these pathologies. The oxidation sensitivity of erythrocytes in these pathologies is high and study of the regulation mechanisms of the antioxidant systems, including the investigation of the role of selenium which is the one of its major components, is of interest. Metabolism of selenium depends on the regional supply, different types of pathology and we set a goal to study its participation in these pathologies. It is shown that the red blood cells of these patients have a high oxidation sensitivity (accumulation of products reacting with tiobarbiture acid), reduced content glutathione in them, the activity of antioxidant enzymes (catalase and glutathione peroxidase) and violated metabolism of selenium. Additionally, the relation between selenium content and glutathioneperoxidase activity slighly changes in the anemia and depends on its type.

The Indian tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon is the principal species being cultured. Of late hatchery sector is being dependent on wild gravid females due to non response of broodstock to eyestalk ablation. High cost of gravid females compelling the grow-out sector to stock pathogen carrier seeds. Hence domestication of tiger shrimp is essential to produce Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) broodstock / Disease Resistant (DR) broodstock. Merits and demerits of SPF versus DR broodstock are presented. Development of SPF broodstock involves stringent management of environment to arrest the entry of pathogens and more than one economic trait can be selected. Whereas in development of DR broodstock animals are challenged with the pathogen and a selection of other economic traits are less possible. Resistance in shrimp exists at the species level as well as individual level. Experiment on domestication of P. monodon in which programme was advanced up to F3 generation has revealed the existence of resistance for WSSV at the individual level. Selective breeding programme for development of D R broodstock involves development of disease free base population, forming them into families, production of F1 generation family wise through inbreeding, challenging each family with WSSV at 3-5 g size and rearing survived individuals up to 100 g size, production of F2 generation by random inter crossing between families, advancing the programme up to F5 generation. Development of DR broodstock is imperative to ensure sustainable shrimp production.

Abstract 

The experiment was conducted in the research area of the department of Plant Breeding and Genetics, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. The research material were comprised of 20 genotypes of sunflower (G-16, G-30, G-32, G-36, G-44, G-45, G- 61, G-64, G-66, G-68, G-86, A-2, A-14, A-23, A-56, A-60, A-61, A-79, A-133 and A-185). The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications in the year 2013.The Breeding experiment was perform to enhance the yield by incorprating the yield related traits in genotypes. Results revealed that the strongest correlation of seed yield was observed with 1000-grain weight at genotypic level, 1000 grain weight and oil contents were positively and significantly correlated at phenotypic and genotypic levels with total achene weight. So the 1000-seed weight and oil contents are important yield components and could be used as selection criteria to improve seed yield. In path coefficient, highest positive indirect effect of chlorophyll was through oil content. While that direct selection for oil contents, Fresh head diameter, Plant height and days to 50% flowering will give the best results for total achene weight per plant.

Abstract

Genetic engineering extends tremendous scope and opportunities in fruit production by providing new genotypes for breeding purpose, supply of healthy and disease free planting material, improvement in fruit quality, enhancing shelf-life, availability of biopesticides, biofertilizers, etc. Integration of specially desired traits through genetic engineering has been possible in some horticultural crops. Recent advancements in molecular biology and genetics transformation have made it possible to identify, isolate and transfer desirable genes from any living organism to plants. The introduction or enhancement of desirable traits is traditionally done by breeding but it is time consuming and is not very precise. On the other hand, genetic engineering creates plants with specific changes in the background of a proven cultivar without disturbing their genetic constitution. Expression of undesirable genes can be blocked by the application of antisense gene technology and RNAi technology. Genetic transformation provides the means for modifying horticultural traits in various horticultural crops without altering their phenotype.
