Quantification of Phenolic Compounds from Kinnow Juice Processing Industry Waste

Abstract 

Kinnow juice processing industry waste being rich in antioxidants and phenolic content was generated in large amount, so disposal of this waste has become major problem. Kinnow (pulp residue and pomace) were screened for quantification of phenolic acids, mineral composition, polyphenolic compounds, alkaloids, tannins content, and DPPH free radical scavenging activity. Both kinnow pomace residue exhibit more antioxidant activity, higher DPPH free radical scavenging activity than only kinnow pulp residue. After acetone treatment it was found that kinnow pulp residue and kinnow pomace (peel and pulp) residue contain 19.54% and 22% solubles in acetone respectively. Results of mineral analysis has showed that iron content, zinc and copper content were 213.56 ppm, 18.68 ppm, 4.99 ppm respectively in kinnow pomace which was more than pulp residue. Total phenolic content and DPPH activity was 3.45mg/g and 42.45% in acetone treated kinnow pomace (peel and pulp) which was quite higher as compared to in acetone treated kinnow pulp residue which was 1.95 mg/g and 23.15% respectively. The major phenols were hesperidin, naringin, limonin andnarginine in kinnow juice processing industry waste, which were also partially responsible for overall antioxidant activity.

Thermochemical treatment and solventogenesis of rice straw for the production of carboxymethyl cellulose

Abstract: 

The aim of this work was to study the thermochemical treatment and solventogenesis of rice straw to produce carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) by etherification using sodium chloroacetate (SCA) and sodium hydroxide. Study included the optimization of process parameters such as thereaction for temperature, time and chemicals concentration. This resulted a CMCwith anefficient degree of substitution (DS) of 0.813, which compared satisfactorily to other forms of cellulose. CMC and cellulose produced from rice straw showed similar features to standard samples of CMC and cellulose, respectively as characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared spectra (FTIR). SEM of delignifiedpulp showed more exposed cellulose fibrilscompared to rice straw and the structure of the CMC showedsmooth surfacemorphology. Results showed that rice straw could be potentially used as substrate for the production of carboxymethl cellulose (CMC).

Abstract 

Geobacillus thermoleovoransIr1 (JQ912239) is a novel thermophilic bacterium, it was isolated from hydrocarbon contaminated soil in Iraq and showed good ability to utilize aromatic compounds, It is represented a new carbazole-degrading bacterium. The strain Ir1 (JQ912239) showed high ability to degrade nylon6 with optimum conditions for growth in chemical define media CDM containing (1%) nylon6, and shaking incubator (180rpm) at 65°C for 7 days, and to confirm the ability to degrade nylon6, analytical experiments HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography) and FTIR (Fourier Transmittance Infrared Spectroscopy) were used. The 6- aminohexanoicacid and caprolactam as intermediate products in the culture medium were mentioned by using HPLC, while partial biodegradation of the nylon6 was monitored by using FTIR.

Abstract 

The present investigation was carried out to assess the potential of Salvinia cucullata Seg. and Salvinia molesta D. Mitch to uptake lead (Pb) from wastewater by phytoremediation. Plant materials cultured in Hoagland’s nutrient medium supplemented with different concentration of lead nitrate Pb (NO3)2 solution estimated for biomass productivity and other biochemical parameters. The results revealed that increased lead toxicity (10-100 mg/l) could not only decrease the growth but also the photosynthetic pigment, protein and carbohydrate content were also reduced. The results indicated that increase in the lead concentration (10-100 ppm) in the medium decreased the growth of S. cucullata up to 43% (100 ppm) whereas the decrease in growth of S. molesta was upto 62% (100 ppm) as compared to control. Total photosynthetic pigment, protein and carbohydrate content were also reduced in both the species with increase in lead concentration while proline content was enhanced. The increased bio-concentration factor (BCF) of S. cucullata (1283) further confirmed its greater potential of lead reclamation as compared to S. molesta (1206) at 100 ppm concentration. The higher BCF of Salvinia cucullata indicated that it can be a better choice for phytoremediation of wastewater containing Pb when compared to Salvinia molesta.

Abstract 

A group of extracellular compounds are formed during the primary and/or secondary microbial metabolism in the form of volatile metabolites. A specific bioreactor was constructed and volatile metabolites emitted from organisms belonging to thermophilic Bacillus group were used in bioremediation of heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Zn) as an individual or mixed metal species. The volatile compounds act as a ligand to form insoluble metal precipitation and thus help in bioremediation process. The Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) analysis has identified some organo-sulfur groups and nitrogen based compound in metal precipitates. Consequently, the bioreactor and bioprocess can be applied for the elimination of heavy metals from contaminated wastes especially the aggressive industrial effluents containing heavy metals in a cost effective and eco-friendly process.

Abstract 

AAS can be used to determine over 70 different elements in crude oil samples. Atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) is an analytical technique that measures the concentrations of elements. Atomic absorption can measure down to parts per billion of a gram (µg dm–3 ) in a sample. The technique makes use of the wavelengths of light specifically absorbed by an element. They correspond to the energies needed to promote electrons from one energy level to another, higher, energy level. Atomic absorption spectrometry has many uses in different areas of chemistry. Atoms of different elements absorb characteristic wavelengths of light. Analysing a sample to see if it contains a particular element means using light from that element. In AAS, the sample is atomised, converted into ground state free atoms in the vapour state, and a beam of electromagnetic radiation emitted from excited lead atoms is passed through the vaporised sample. Some of the radiation is absorbed by the lead atoms in the sample. The greater the number of atoms there is in the vapour, the more radiation is absorbed. Atomic absorption spectrometry is used to analyse the presence of certain metals in crude oil.

Abstract

This review highlights the bioemulsifier-producing microorganisms, which are capable of producing metabolites that are industrially helpful. Biosurfactants with high molecular weight (bioemulsifiers) produce stable emulsions that allow the bacteria to adhere strongly to the hydrophobic surfaces and then start degrading the large biological complexes. Bioemulsifiers are classified according to the hydrophile-lipophile balance; the ones having a low hydrophile-lipophile balance are strong lipophiles and therefore are used as water-in-oil emulsifiers, while those having a high hydrophilelipophile balance are strong hydrophiles and used as oil-in-water emulsifiers. Most of the strains that are able to produce bioemulsifier to the maximum amount belong to the genera Bacillus. The capacity of certain strains to emulsify octane, xylene, toluene, mineral oil and crude oil, and its ability to remove hydrocarbons, look promising in the bioremediation applications.

Abstract 

Introduction: This experiment was conducted at the College of Science labs, Kufa University, on 2013 to describe methods for extraction and purification of β- carotene, carbohydrate and vitamin C content from callus tissue and tap roots mother plant (Daucus carota L.) this study aims to add further techniques in the field of plant biotechnology focusing specifically on tissue culture. Methodology: Callus induction from hypocotyls ( 2 cm pieces) by using MS medium supplemented with dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2, 4-D) at concentration of (1 ,2, 3) mg/l. Shoots regenerated from callus by using MS medium supplemented with ( IAA )at concentration of (1) mg/l and (BA) benzyl adenine at concentration of (0.2) mg/l in dark condition ,fresh standard solution of control(Ascorbic acid, Glucose and carotenoids).The content of β-carotene was done by using HPLC (high performance liquid chromatography), vitamin C and carbohydrate were done by using Spectrophotometric method at 620 nm and compare of the quantitatively of β-carotene, carbohydrate and vitamin C with these content in tap roots of mother plant, Shoots regenerated and callus tissue. Results: This study include alcohol extraction by using acetone .The result revealed that, the superiority of β-carotene, carbohydrate and vitamin C in Callus content and regenerated shoots than the content in tap roots mother plant and increase the content of these compound in the shoots of regenerated plant with the content in callus tissue.
