Abstract

Gymnosperms are the plants of the great evolutionary and the economic values .They have the long fossil history .The Mesozoic era has been termed as the age of the cycads. However in the recent era coniferales are the only representative of the wholes of the group. Cycadales shows the relict lines of the evolution .In conifers also pseudotsuga Pis the plant of the great interest. In America the northern belt of the plants is the dominant part of the vegetation. In India Pseudosuga can be found in the Himalayan belt. Pseudosuga is the main theme of the paper and we have presented some of the aspects of the plants and conservation status. .In this articles we have try to involve the main features of the pseudosuga. Conservation of the plant lines should be the utmost work of the many governments in India as well as the other part of the globe. The forest of the Pseudosuga sustains the long belt of the forest ecosystem. Degradation of the keystone species leads to the disappearances of the whole ecosystem.

Abstract

Rajasthan, the largest state of India, has extraordinary diversity and climatic conditions. Beer Jhunjhunu Conservation Reserve, a protected forest area of Jhunjhunu district of the state is endowed with rich plant diversity. An extensive survey of the region reveals that the area is luxuriant in vegetation and enriched with many rare, endemic and threatened categories of plants. A total of 440 species of flowering plants including one gymnosperm were documented from the study area. Among the recorded plant species, 35 taxa were reported as rare, endemic and threatened from the area. The threatened status of the plant was confirmed with IUCN Red List and other standard publications on rare and threatened taxa of the country. At present, different factors like exploitation of plants by means of fuel and overgrazing by increasing livestock population declining the forest cover of Beer Conservation Reserve Jhunjhunu in a rapid pace. Many plant species are facing threats for their existence. These species require special attention towards preservation on high priority basis. Therefore, it becomes imperative to identify and locate populations of rare and threatened taxa in the area and evolve strategies for their conservation.

Abstract

Panax assamicus R. N. Banerjee and Panax bipinnatifidus Seem are two most important endangered species rarely found in North-East India. Due to overexploitation this medicinally valuable plant, it is under the threat of extinction in North-East India. Therefore, molecular documentation of few accessions of Panax assamicus and Panax bipinnatifidus from different locations in Meghalay and Arunachal Pradesh was carried out to develop species specific Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP) marker in automated DNA sequencer. Unique set of common alleles generated from electropherogram in AFLP analysis, depending on primer pairs viz. EcoRIACA*/ MSeI-CTA, EcoRIAAG*/MSeICTC, EcoRIACG*/ MSeI-CTG and EcoRI-AGC*/MSeI-CAA, for different accessions of same species are regarded as species specific molecular markers. Both the species Panax assamicus and Panax bipinnatifidus showed 85.25% and 94.55% polymorphism, respectively. The similarity coefficient matrix reflected genetic relatedness among Panax landraces of two species. Cluster I is comprised of four land races of Panax bipinnatifidus and Cluster II is consisted four land races of Panax assamicus in the dendogram, depicting the significance of molecular taxonomy over classical taxonomy to resolute taxonomic complexity of Panax species in NE India. Along with the information on molecular authentication to resist adulteration of these two endangered species the recent research also provides species specific DNA marker relating to catalogue these plant genetic resources.

Abstract

Present paper deals with a detailed study of taxonomy, floral characters and ethnomedicinal properties of twelve endangered but medicinally important plant species. This work attempts to assess the current status of medicinal plant resources. However, the present scenario shows a decline in the number of these plants. Habitat destruction due to over grazing and mining is confined as a main cause of diversity loss. The excessive extraction of medicinal plant resources for use in the pharmaceutical industry has resulted in ruthless destruction of natural populations of medicinal plants. It also focuses on the importance of plants and conservation and sustainable utilization of medicinal plants. The aim of the study is to promote awareness among the villagers of nearby areas regarding prevention of grazing in the forest areas, medicinal uses of plants, cultivation of these plants through Joint Forest Management and their sustainable management. In the present study Commiphora wightii and Curcuma amada were not observed while Butea superba and Ephedra ciliata were found in least amount. The studied plants are very much beneficial for the health care of mankind. A collaborative work plan involving scientists, forest department and NGO’s is suggested for conservation of medicinal plants.
