Miscellaneous quotes:

"The fastest way to making this team is by being fast." - Herb Brooks

"You think you can come in here and play the Norweigan National team and tie them and then go to the Olympics and win? You have another thing coming." - Coach Herb Brooks

"Win, lose or tie. You are going to play like champions." Coach Herb Brooks

"You want to make this team and then you better start playing at a level that's going to force me to keep you here." - Coach Herb Brooks

"42 games in the last 3 months - 42 wins. Their main weapon is intimidation. They know they are going to win and so do their opponents...Everyone knows what people are saying about our chances. But I also know there is a way to stay with this team. You don't defend them. You attack them! You take their game and you shove it right back in their face. The team that is finally willing to do this is the team that has a chance to take them down. The NHL won't change their game, we will. The rest of the world is afraid of them. Boys, we won't be. No one has ever worked hard enough to skate with the Soviet team an entire game. Gentlemen, we are going to work hard enough." - Coach Herb Brooks on the Soviet Team and beating them:

Coach Herb: Come on, Rizzo.

Rizzo: I know, Coach. I know.

Coach Herb Brooks: You know? If you knew, then why did you do it again? You start putting the puck in the net, or you're not going anywhere. And don't think I won't do it.

A few sayings and quotes of Coach Herb Brooks:

"You can't be common, the common man goes nowhere; you have to be uncommon."

"Boys, I'm asking you to go to the well again."

"Great moments are born from great opportunities."

"Lets be idealistic, but lets also be practical."

"You want to make sacrifices for the unknown"

"I could have picked this team in July and been real close...I kept them on the bubble. That's a key thing."

"They had to reinvent themselves a lot...They had to have a great personal attitude. They were well rounded players that could adapt to a whole new style of play...They're really tough psychologically. They were hard bitten tough people and that could be pulled and at times pushed, but mostly pulled. And understood that great do it again. They had tremendous resiliency. They were tough, tough young people. - Coach Herb Brooks U.S. Olympic team that beat the Soviets

Jimmy Craig with finger pointing at the coach after winning game after being pulled the previous game: I showed you didn't I! I should you didn't I! Coach Herb Brooks: Yep. You sure did Jimmy.

Jimmy Craig - Goaltender

"Jim is in demand from coast to coast and internationally as a motivational speaker, spokesperson, marketing and sales strategist, and master storyteller. He is president of Gold Medal Strategies, a Boston-area based promotions and marketing firm that also manages and represents Jim and his appearance business. Over the past 25 years, Jim has inspired, instructed, and provided strategic and winning direction for employees and associates from more than 300 organizations, including Allianz, Bayer Corporation, Buena Vista Home Entertainment, Coca-Cola, Dunkin’ Donuts, Evergreen Financial, GE Access, Gore Medical, John Hancock, Next Financial, Time Inc., Walt Disney, Welch’s, and other companies that hold some of the world’s most recognized brands.

An All-American goalie at Boston University and standout for the Terriers’ 1978 NCAA championship squad, Jim was selected as the starting goaltender for the U.S. 1980 Olympic hockey team. At the Lake Placid games his performance was phenomenal. Indispensable to Team U.S.A.’s epic – what some have called miraculous – upset of the Soviet Union was the play of Jim Craig. In the game against the Soviets, the Americans were outshot 42-16, but Jim made 39 saves, many of the spectacular variety, and his teammates scored four times. Two days later, against Finland, Jim was again superb, and the Yanks won, 4-2, to take Olympic gold.

How incredible was the victory over the Soviets? Consider that as the 20th century came to a close, most major media sports polls selected what happened two decades prior in Lake Placid, as the number one sports episode of the previous 100 years.

'It may just be the single most indelible moment in all of U.S. sports history,' said Sports Illustrated of Team USA's win over the Soviet Union. 'One that sent an entire nation into frenzy.' - The Agency Group

We are Marshall

Persistence:

Jack Lengyel: One day, not today, not tomorrow, not this season, probably not next season either but one day, you and I are gonna wake up and suddenly we're gonna be like every other team in every other sport where winning is everything and nothing else matters. And when that day comes, well thats, thats when we'll honor them.
