Policy /Procedure

INSCIENCE can write your workplace drug and alcohol policy and advise the type of test, best suited for your business/workplace.

There are many options for you to consider in developing and implementing policy:

  • What sample – Urine or Oral fluid
  • How to test – Service provider or DIY or a combination
  • What drugs to test for?
  • When to test?
  • Who to test?

All of these factors influence your choice of drug testing sample and drug test device.

INSCIENCE can assist you in development and writing a Drug and Alcohol policy or reviewing and adapting your existing policy and procedures to include Oral Fluid Testing or any other requirement made essential with recent legislative changes.

Why would you consider inclusion of Oral Fluid as a test sample in your workplace?

  • Oral Fluid portable analyser systems make testing simpler and less subjective for DIY
  • High cost of employee loss from urine drug test for recreational use
  • Employee demand for a fairer test of potential impairment – acute impairment
  • Considered less invasive
  • Less potential for cheating
  • No requirement for bathroom facility

Why would you use Urine as a sample for Drug  testing Urine is the most common sample used as a testing medium for drugs in New Zealand Workplaces largely due to the following:

  • Has joint Australian New Zealand Standard
  • Lower cost per test than Oral Fluid
  • Two Confirmatory Testing Laboratories accessible in New Zealand
  • Preferred for Pre employment drug testing as it identifies Habitual and recent users
  • Well understood and established use in NZ

Urine drug testing is a well established practice in todays workplaces as a part of their Drug and Alcohol Policy with many independent providers of testing services available  throughout New Zealand. Inscience proudly supplies and supports many of these service providers (see links).

Urine drug testing is well understood, mainstream , reasonably economical and well served by Australian New Zealand Standards AS/NZS4308:2008 and Accredited Laboratory Confirmatory Testing Services, ESR and CHL.

Oral Fluid Drug Testing has had less uptake in New Zealand largely due to the perception it was not legally supported by a set of New Zealand Standards. There are however many NZ Workplaces using Oral fluid and the AS4760:2006 standards as its guideline since the launch of Standards complaint oral fluid test devices and systems in New Zealand. There are numerous benchmarks where New Zealand recognises Australian Standards as its own in the absence of a joint or individual standard.

Oral Fluid Testing and the pending Joint New Zealand Australian Standards for Oral Fluid Testing is specifically directed at the detection and quantitation of drugs in Oral Fluid recently used i.e within the acute impairment period.

Currently Australian and New Zealand Workplaces can utilise an Oral Fluid sample testing programme under AS 4760:2006
