Expanding connections have been made with:

  • The Minnesota Humanities Center to involve Native American educators.
  • The Southern Poverty Law Center to add their resources to courses.
  • Cultural Jambalaya to expand global connections.
  • Moodle implementation strategies shared at the MN Moodle Moot in August.
  • Schoology has offered to provide assistance in support for copying courses and setting up groups within districts to facilitate those hosting MPCC content in Schoology.
  • MN OER Commons has a section for MPCC content that is ready for public sharing.
  • Google has connected us with a district in California interested in our model for collaborative development.

Teacher Implementation Networks: We have received great feedback from the network of teachers adopting or adapting the curriculum in their schools. Additional funds have been dedicated to this from the Osseo Education Minnesota grant to make improvements based on the feedback. New Network plans are being formulated for this year.

We now have 173 school agencies committed to the initiative.

We have had a productive summer and fall, with 20 courses now open for review and/or piloting. Please see the updated course status list for details.

Implementation has become a source of greater attention now, as teachers and districts grapple with how to incorporate digital resources into the classroom and the curriculum review cycle.

Two-day training sessions were held in August and September for teachers and leaders from districts who will be using the content this year. We are working on establishing networks for the teachers piloting each course, so that they can share feedback, improvements, and additions to the content.

The next wave of course development projects is planned to begin in January, with proposals being accepted starting in December.

Discussions are beginning on long-term plans for sustainability and expansion to other content areas.

Look for us at these conferences if you would like to know more, or be part of smaller group discussion on the future of open digital curriculum:

Curriculum Leaders of Minnesota (CLM) conference in Brainerd Nov 12-14

128 geographic districts
8 charter schools

10 nonpublic schools

Another 25 districts have sent inquiries and are considering the agreement to join. Membership is open at any time, and inquiry begins with the Agreement Request Form. We are always happy to visit with districts or regional groups to discuss involvement in the project.

Wave 2 projects

We have completed initial training for writers and facilitators of the 13 Wave 2 projects for development this spring-summer. There were 85-90 participants in the two days of training on the expectations, resources, processes, and considerations for developing shared digital curriculum. We are excited to see these move forward!

Review

We are assembling review teams for the 5 courses that are nearing completion from Wave 1, and before too long for the 13 courses in Wave 2. If you are interested in joining a review team, please submit the Review Team Application.

Implementation

As courses become ready for pilot, we are developing plans for implementation training and rollout. The Implementation Committee has met and drafted guidelines for piloting newly developed courses. We also have designed and piloted implementation workshops for district planning and for teachers who will be using the courses in the classroom. Additional information on piloting and training will be sent over the summer.

By September 2014, we plan to have up to 20 courses available for pilot by partner districts.

The more districts we have committed, the more projects we can complete.

Thank you to all who are involved and committed to moving this project forward. As a grassroots effort, your contributions are vital to our success!

Sincerely,
Jon Voss

The next wave of projects will be determined in March, with training in April and writing to be done from May through July. We hope to have 10-15 projects completed this summer, so that a full 20 courses will be available for partner districts to pilot or use starting in September.

Sponsorship support

Partner districts who choose to sponsor a course development project receive support in recruiting writers and steering team members, training writers and facilitators, access to templates for course design and structure in Google docs, and rubric tools for reviewing the courses as they are developed. Districts can submit a Proposal to Sponsor an MPCC Course Development Project and receive access to a Sponsor Toolkit to guide them through the process. Details are on the page for Sponsoring projects.

Curriculum review

Our Curriculum Review Rubric has been refined to include elements deemed critical to partner districts. This will be used in several stages in the Course Creation and Certification Structure: first with the course writers and facilitators, then with the course steering team, and finally with Executive Steering Committee reviewers. Partner districts who pilot courses will also be able to provide input on areas that need further improvement and refinement.

Implementation Planning

Support for implementation of digital curriculum is proceeding with a number of elements in an Implementation Toolkit:
- Sample rollout plan with training options
- Key messages and rationale from research and trends
- Experiences from districts who have implemented already

Plans for next stages

February 13: Executive Steering Committee meeting

March 1: Wave 2 projects determined

Projects
There are 5 projects currently under way, and one on hold for now: see MPCC Current Projects

We will start planning the next wave of projects in January and February. There have already been a number of suggestions and proposals, so if you have particular subject area or grade level needs, now is the time to get involved!

TIES Conference

Thank you to all who attended our session at TIES, and any others related to the use of open digital curriculum resources.
Perhaps next year a strand on implementing OER and digital content in the classroom would be worth considering.

Development Training
Two site-based sessions were held in December for writers and facilitators of the current projects.

Session 1: MPCC Writers Workshop
- Purpose, Vision, Digital Design, Copyright, Requirements for Content, Google domain

Session 2: Equity and Diversity
- Culturally responsive curriculum, recognizing bias, guiding principles for development

Opportunities for the future: Additional sessions will be held in the spring for the next wave of projects.
Additional site-based sessions or an online series could be considered for others interested in learning about digital content development.

Implementation Training

Plans and pilots for training teachers in implementing digital curriculum in the classroom are under way. The two-day sessions used with the 6th and 7th grade courses are being reviewed in coordination with Osseo for a session with teachers at the end of January. Additional opportunities for implementation training will be critical to successful adoption. Proposals for funding requests through grants and other sources are being researched.
