 What is Tae kwon-do

Tae kwon-Do is a relatively new martial art. Developed in Korea by General Choi Hong-Hi (1918-2002) who unveiled it to the world on the 11th April 1955. Tae kwon-Do is famous for its spectacular high kicks and its code of ethics. Tae kwon-do is one of the most systematic and scientific traditional martial arts, it teaches more than physical fighting skills. It is a discipline that shows ways of enhancing our spirit and life through training our body and mind. It aims not only to develop the student physically, but mentally also, creating an all round better person. To achieve such an effect General Choi Hong-Hi included the 5 tenets which will be learned by each student who practices Tae Kwon Do at Innishannon TKD:

                    ·         Courtesy,

                    ·         Integrity,

                    ·         Perseverance,

                    ·         Self-Control,

                    ·         Indomitable Spirit.

By making these five elements a regular part of one's personality, General Choi believed a person could become a better member of society.

                    ·         Increased Self Confidence & Self Discipline to develop a positive attitude toward life!

Tae kwon-Do is known as an empty hand martial art. By this we mean weapons are not used. Defence against weapons is often taught, but a student of Taekwondo, well versed in the art of self defence, should have no need of them. By practicing Taekwondo you will not only improve your health, make new friends and enjoy yourself, but you will also arm yourself with the means needed to defend yourself, if necessary.

ITF Tae kwon-Do, as presented by General Choi Hong Hi, is in a constant state of evolution. The General believed that any organisation that is perceived to have reached its objectives is likely to lose momentum, stagnate and die. The evolution that Tae kwon do is undergoing is the reason it differs greatly from other martial arts. No other martial art is so advanced with regard to the sophistication and effectiveness of its technique and the overall physical fitness it imparts to its practitioners.
