Google Earth Activitiy

My classmate, Karissa Herrick, and I created a lesson where students get to interact with technology to apply geometry to real world situations. The SOL we chose to use is:

G.13       The student will use formulas for surface area and volume of three-dimensional objects to solve real-world problems.

To create a little competition we decided that students would draw the name of a volcano out of a hat, then use Google Earth to locate the volcano. Using the tools available in the program, students would then take measurements of the volcano to calculate the surface area and volume. The group with the largest volcano would be the "winner." We structured it this way so that students would be engaged in the learning and more motivated to see who wins. To get the students started, we created a screencast of an example showing how to search the volcano, and how to navigate the tools required to complete this assignment.
