Region 6 Champions!!! 11 going to TSSAA State!

posted Feb 15, 2016, 10:00 AM by Indy Eagle

The independence wrestling team competed over the weekend at the Region 6 Individual tournament (the individual qualifier for the TSSAA State tournament).  Going into the weekend it looked like the team would have around 6-8 wrestlers that should be able to qualify for the TSSAA State tournament by placing top 4 in the region tournament.   Although it is an individual tournament they still keep track of total team points and it was looking like Indy would have a good chance to finish somewhere in the top 3 for the team race.  Independence ended up winning the overall team championship and it wasn’t even close.  Over the past 9 years, the wrestling team has NEVER had a performance like they had this past weekend. The team championship was wrapped up at about the half way point of the tournament.   A total of 11 wrestlers (out of 14) finished in the top 4 and will be advancing to the state tournament this upcoming week at the Ag Center here in Williamson County.  Last year the team only had 4 make it to state, 1 was a senior so only 3 returned state qualifiers were on the team this season.  Increasing that number to 11 for this year was very impressive (Actually has 2 others place 5th and narrowly missed qualifying for the state tournament, could have been a bakers dozen).

Congrats to the entire Indy wrestling community!  Now let's go get some state medals!!!
