The Harruba has many different names. It is an evergreen shrub or tree native to the Mediterranean region. During World War II these plants provided food for the local inhabitants as other sources of food became scarce.

Carob pods are a source of sugar. Farmers use  the produce to feed animals.
The tree can grow quite large, approx 10-12 metres.
