The Amidah: Layers Within Layers
This seminar is free and open to the public, sponsored by a generous donor and:
Congregation Etz Chayim, 4161 Alma St., Palo Alto
Thursdays, noon to 1:15PM

Do the traditional Hebrew prayers seem out-of-date, boring, or too wordy?  For many people, they just do not encapsulate what we actually want to pray about -- if we even want to pray at all!
And yet, for two thousand years our ancestors managed to say the Amidah prayer every single day, 3 times a day. Many Jews still do.  What are they getting that we are missing?

In part, they are reading hidden cues, hyperlinks within the text of the prayer that trigger a rich set of awareness and emotions.  This class will open those hyperlinks, and explore what’s inside.

Like the Star Spangled Banner is to Americans, the Amidah is the poem of the Jewish people -- only older, and more influential.  Whether you believe in God or not, whether you like to pray or not, the Amidah is worth understanding.  Come join us for an in depth, open, honest discussion, led by Ilana Goldhaber-Gordon (scientist, soon-to-be rabbi).
