Career History

IT System Supervisor

Maco UK


Maco UK is the British branch of an Austrian manufacturer of door and window hardware. My brief was to re-organise the IT systems after a period of neglect and:

” Make IT a core competitive advantage of Maco UK”

To this end I:

·         Installed a new telephone System

·         Integrated the telephone system with Microsoft Outlook

·         Installed and Integrated Microsoft Dynamics with the telephone system

·         Installed Microsoft SharePoint and created SharePoint sites

·         Moved business systems from a paper based workflow to an electronic one

·         Installed a new wireless system to support a paper free ‘picking system


2007 – 2008                    Information Technology Manager, Mylcrist Builders. Whitstable


·         Designed and installed a Microsoft Client Server Network (Windows 2003 Server)

·         Introduced Project management and calendaring systems

·         Introduced internal/external Email systems

1993 – 2005                    Computer Systems Manager, Huyck UK, Whitstable

Achievements and responsibilities:

  • Analysed the company’s data streams and work patterns to produce to produce a schema of operations, and then engaged the relevant departmental managers in discussion concerning any elements that appeared unnecessary or illogical.
  • Determined the operational requirements for the new system.
  • Established the technical design for the system.
  • Produced a full report, consisting of anticipated system design together with operational changes and financial justification for the regional headquarters in America.
  • Created a UNIX /Windows Infrastructure running on an AT&T UNIX Box.
  • Designed and created an Informix database to manage the manufacturing processes, sales, quality and customer records. These were subsequently migrated, first to Microsoft SQL and Visual Basic and lastly to SQL and .NET, in order to better meet the company’s objectives.
  • Designed and had installed category 5 TCP/IP network together with ‘Tevista’ Network Management software.
  • Introduced the Internet and Email to the company.
  • Designed and coordinated the roll out of an Email system to the Xerium group worldwide (43 sites in 12 countries.), reducing communications costs by approximately £200,000 a year by careful capacity management.
  • Migrated the entire system to a purely windows based architecture, including moving the database from Informix to Windows SQL server, (Windows 2003) whilst maintaining a‘live’ system and ensuring no interruption to the business process. The migration reduced ongoing maintenance costs by £50,000 a year.
  • Produced over one hundred and fifty reports on all aspects of production and sales for the European and Asian regions using Crystal Reports versions 6 through to 9.
  • Instituted Firewall and anti-virus procedures to the effect that over an eight-year period there was only one security breach involving thirteen computers, which was resolved by my staff in a morning. Over the same period our overseas divisions had weeks of system downtime as a result of virus incursions.
  • Selected and managed the installation of document control systems for ISO 9001 implementation and customer relationship management.
  • Selected and installed the security system.
  • Selected and installed the biometric time and attendance system.
  • Introduced Virtual Private Networks enabling both home workers and  roaming employees secure access to the Company network from anywhere on the internet


1990 – 1993                    Team Leader, Central Office Systems, Kent County Council.

Achievements and responsibilities:

·                     Leading a team of five, I was responsible for the management of the County Hall Office System, a UNIX mini computer supporting three hundred and twenty users using an Ethernet running the TCP/IP protocols. As system manager I was responsible for both the efficient administration of the system and the development of new utilities. I also researched and determined strategy with respect to the future of the system and the network.

·                     For the last six months I managed the transition from a Sequoia computer to a Sun 690MPS.
