(I3)(I-CUBED) National Science Foundation Grant
Innovation through Institutional Integration (I3) challenges institutions of higher education to optimize the benefits derived from the creative integration of intellectual perspectives and related domains of work embedded in their NSF-funded awards, towards a whole that exceeds the sum of its parts. The value added by such synergistic activity is a hallmark of the I3 effort and a critical component of I3 evaluation.

Goal 1. institutionalizing, improving and sustaining a
formal STEM enterprise
A. MATH/SCIENCE ASNS Degree Moved from provisional to permanent in July 2011. See: ASNS Degree details
A significant achievement is the institutionalization of the ASNS degree, submitted April 2011 to the Council of Chief Academic Officers and in July 2011 to the Board of Regents.
B. EXTERNAL EVALUATOR (PREL) REPORT, RECOMMENDATIONS, AND IMPLEMENTATION
1. PREL Report received December 2010
2. A significant change is underway in 2011 to integrate the external evaluator role to cover the I-Cubed grant as well as the new PEEC and TCUP grants that began in October 2010. Approval for this move has been received both from NSF and through the PIs of the three grants, and we are proceeding with an RFP this summer, 2011. We think this model will work, but it is currently under construction as another I-Cubed FIRE-UP effort to integrate the grants we are working in. C. The AIM Survey was repeated in January 2011 with approximately the same number of participants as the 2009 survey. Raw data has been received and all trends are positive.

D. I-Cubed developed a STEM Grants Management Chart This chart is currently out of date since Dr. John Rand is spending this academic year at the National Science Foundation.
E. I-Cubed FIRE-UP has been invited by I-Cubed grantee, WESTAT, as one of six I-Cubed recipients to participate in their research project to explore how members of the academy interact as they attempt to implement their respective institution’s Innovation through Institutional Integration (“I3”) program. They will combine social network analysis (SNA) with a case study approach to develop a rich picture of how various program activities are integrated into these more synergistic wholes. Utilizing a combination of SNA methodology, document and data review, and site participant interviews to build a picture of initial status and change over time. The SNA data collection will occur in years 1, 3, and 5, with case study activities taking place in years 2 and 4. Interviews will predominantly take place in years 1 and 5. F. June 24-25, 2011. I-Cubed FIRE-UP sent representatives, Charles Sasaki and Amy Patz-Yamashiro to a QEM weekend conference
Goal 2. increasing the number of STEM faculty engaged in producing STEM degree completers from six to 26 thus improving gatekeeper course student success rates.
A. Garon Smith visit, February 2011. Garon Smith, University of Montana Chemistry Professor, was at the college, interacting with FIRE-UP faculty from years 1 and 2 Institutes discussing their innovations and progress in meeting their goals. He also was a judge at our middle-school science fair held at the College and participated in the Physics Olympics activities, two middle and high school outreach projects of the College.
