Send the image to students in advance (http://www.icons-land.com/images/products/VistaEmoticonsPreview.jpg ) -Emoticons

 

Send edmodo polls out to students in advance asking their thoughts on edmodo, thoughts on communicating online etc. (Good for convincing your management and staff of its use)

Pre-starter:

Show http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hzgzim5m7oU – Power of Words

Students log on to edmodo while video playing then come to front

 

5 mins

Starter:

Put the word etiquette on the whiteboard and ask who knows what it means. Tease out meaning and examples (good example is use of knife and fork). Finish off by saying that online this is known as netiquette

Activity 1:

Show BrainPOP to show how relevant netiquette is and what it involves

Activity 2:

Show students key pieces from their communication on edmodo and how these could be interpreted as issues with netiquette

 

10 mins

Activity 3:

Students return to computers and edmodo to answer polls and then discuss meanings of emoticons. There will probably be some different asnwers and discussion from this
