Statement of Objectives

Modular robotic systems have been shown to be very useful for performing tasks in highly unstructured and initially unknown environments which demand a high level of dexterity and maneuverability from the robot. Modular robots are being increasingly used in several robotic applications such as autonomous inspection of engineering structures, semi-autonomous medical surgery, extra-terrestrial exploration, etc. However, despite having a very high potential of impact towards solving several problems in different domains that require autonomous robots, the use of modular robots is not widespread. Modular robotics also brings along a set of design and computational challenges that are unique to it, and usually not encountered in conventional robotic systems.

The proposed workshop will aim to raise awareness about the potential of modular robotic systems in two main directions: 

  • Familiarize the attendees with the state-of-the-art modular robotic systems that are being used in different robotic domains.For this, we will invite eminent researchers to give keynote presentations on recent implementations and deployments of modular robotic systems in different domains such as manufacturing and production, maintenance/inspection of scientific facilities, medicine, field robotics, space exploration and entertainment.
  • Discuss the advantages of solutions offered by modular robot systems, and existing challenges in developing and deploying such solutions. Towards this aim, we will invite peer-reviewed, paper submissions that discuss the existing technologies, challenges and open research problems in the construction, computation and deployment of modular robots. The overall goal of this workshop will be to highlight to the audience the diversity of scenarios where modular robots can be used, and the types of alternative solutions they offer relative to conventional systems.
