The Border Fortifications

Written by : Kjeld Magnussen

The name border fortifications is given seven rather small fortifications along the southern part of the frontier dividing Sweden and Norway. They were built in the time period 1901 – 1903 as a consequence of the political conflict which lead to the dissolution of the Union between the two nations in 1905.

Nobody would really expect “little brother” Norway to attack “big brother” Sweden neither on that occasion nor later. The border fortifications were not able to participate in such an invasion, but the Swedes regarded the fortifications as a dangerous menace and demanded demolition to desist from war.

Consequently the fortifications were torn down and Norway left the union as an independent kingdom.
