Iceni Under-16 Girls compete in first London League tournament

Last month the Iceni Under-16 Girls team played

their first London league tournament and demonstrated the progress they have

achieved in the last year.

The three-way tournament against Croydon and Ealing was held on 27

th January with

the teams playing each other twice. Iceni finished with very creditable results, winning

one game and drawing two more to finish 2

nd overall.

Match 1 Iceni v Croydon: Iceni took a swift lead through Ellisse Morey before strong

counter-attacks put Croydon ahead 4-2 at half time. Iceni closed the gap with goals from

Dani Brazier and Rachael Moore before Croydon scored again to win the match 6-4.

Match 2 Iceni v Ealing: Iceni started very quickly despite having just played against

Croydon and took a 3 goal lead through some excellent play from Dani, Rachel and

Ellisse before Ealing managed to get on the score sheet. With a comfortable 5-1 halftime

lead, Iceni were able to introduce some of the younger players which allowed

Ealing back into the game. Iceni then powered ahead to a convincing 9-4 win.

Match 3 Iceni v Croydon: after their first victory the Londoners were very confident, but

the Iceni girls caught them napping and swiftly took a 3-0 lead. Croydon took advantage

of several Iceni exclusions to go into half time 4-4. In a very good second half both sides

scored 3 more and the game was drawn 7-7.

Match 4 Iceni v Ealing: Iceni again raced into a lead of 3-0 before tiredness started to tell

and Ealing came back to level 3-3 at half-time. Iceni conceded more exclusions and

Ealing took the lead before Lauren Kirby leveled the score to finish with a 4-4 draw.

The Iceni team were made up of girls aged 11 to 15. While nine of the girls already play

regularly with East Region clubs, four have been discovered via the monthly Girls

Training Camp sessions at Felsted School. This is a major boost for the

development policy of backing the Iceni model and encouraging girls from across the

region to try Water Polo.
