Audio Cable for Smartphone Application

The iBats application for smartphones is available for the iPhone and smartphone running the Android operating system.  To connect the smartphone to a bat detector a special 3.5mm audio lead is required which consists of a 3.5mm TRS plug  (to bat detector) at one end and a 3.5mm TRRS plug   (to smartphone) at the other (although for older ‘Android’ phone models a standard stereo 3.5mm  lead may be suitable).

You can obtain a suitable lead in a number of ways:

  1. Purchase one from your project leader – a limited number have been created for this project.
  2. Purchase an iPhone 1/8 inch microphone adapter. These are currently only available from KVConnection in the USA - http://www.kvconnection.com/product-p/km-iphone-mic.htm. You also require a standard 3.5mm stereo lead to connect into the adaptor (which is widely available).

    3. Build your own! You will need a 3.5mm 3-pole plug, a 3.5mm 4-pole plug, a 0.22uF capacitor and a 4.7k resistor. And of course a length of         cable and a soldering iron. The lead has been designed by Brock Craft and more information is available on his website - http://www.brockcraft.com/2010/02/24/iphone-stereo-line-in-to-mic-adapter/
