Seminar a Success!

posted Jan 18, 2013, 1:59 PM by Bradley Anderson

Over the Dec 1-2, 2012 weekend the Musoshindenryu Iaido - Agassiz dojo, in association with the Midwest Kendo Federation had our second regional iaido seminar hosted in Fargo, North Dakota.

We had a smaller group attending this year, which meant more personalized attention and interaction with the two sensei who attended. We welcomed back both Konno and Parker sensei, who came to our first seminar last year, and had participants from MN, ND,  and CA.

The program consisted of a Friday practice for new arrivals and dojo members where Parker sensei introduced the first 6 MJER Tachi Uchi no Kurai kata. These paired bokuto kata are similar to the All Japan Kendo Federation (ZNKR) kendo kata where the uchidachi is the "attacker" and the shidachi is the "winner." It is a great way to learn distance and timing - especially for iaido practitioners who don't also practice kendo.
Saturday's schedule broke participants into two groups based on experience, who then worked with each of the sensei on kihon (basic techniques) and the ZNKR seitei series kata. There was lots of personal attention, and I could see marked improvement in everyone! Both Konno and Parker sensei provided us with excellent demonstrations of their koryu kata, Musoshindenryu and Muso Jikiden Eishin ryu respectively.

We had an excellent dinner at Osaka Sushi and Hibachi restaurant in Fargo, ND. The teppanyaki show they do is quite entertaining, and everyone had their fill of good food and drink.

Sunday brought more review of kata and kihon and then some self practice where the sensei offered feedback.

It was an excellent opportunity for learning and quality feedback at a personal level! It was a great review for people to prepare before heading to Summer Camp in Omaha next summer for gradings. I can't wait until next year!

Thank you sincerely to Konno and Parker sensei who provided excellent training at our event.

Sensei Confirmed

We have confirmed that Konno sensei from our 2011 seminar will be returning, and he will be joined by Shozo Kato sensei (7dan kyoshi iaido). Both sensei practice the koryu Musoshindenryu, in addition to the Kendo Federation Seitei iai kata.
I met Kato sensei last year at summer camp, and look forward to having him at our seminar this year as well.
Good stuff!

2012 Seminar Tentative Dates Announced

posted Feb 7, 2012, 6:16 AM by Bradley Anderson

We've tentatively decided our 2012 Agassiz Dojo / MWKF Iaido seminar will again be held the last weekend in July. The dates are the 27-29 of July.

Pam Parker Sensei has also confirmed for those dates, so we'll be very happy to welcome her back to Moorhead again.

We're still in the process of petitioning the AUSKF for an additional sensei, and are hoping to see Konno Sensei is available again as well.

The venue this year has changed to Minnesota State University - Moorhead and will be held in the Student Memorial Union Ballroom. A spacious room with a wood floor. Should be perfect!

More updates to follow as details become available.
