You want hugs with that? You read that right. Not fries. Hugs.
There are segments of society that have essentially become today's untouchables. We want to distance ourselves, protect ourselves from them, when what they want and need most is our human compassion, human touch
Maya Sturm, the daughter of Mercy Street's founder, had a heart for the lost. In her life, she specifically expressed that she wanted any earnings from her humorous Hugs slogan to benefit today's untouchables. So in loving memory of Maya, who passed away June 10, 2009, profits from Hugs tee purchases will be split to help pay the bill of local pediatric HIV/AIDS patients, and local mental health care patients. This will remain a community service component of Maya's Place (our Community Arts & Literacy project) once it is established. A memorial offering is also being collected.
By donating an offering to the Hugs Fund or purchasing a HUGS tee, you'll know you've helped touch a life or two on earth, and a soul in heaven...

...ready to deliver hugs?
There have been, easily, a couple hundred earth angels who have given us hugs and personal loving care, or lifted us up in prayer since Maya's passing. Besides our family members, these include friends from the Livonia S./Plymouth MOMS Club and The Detroit News, local members of BSF International, Pastors Michael Bryan and Michael Zerkich, Minister Richard Maddeaux and the Plymouth Church of Christ, notably Max and Laura Ortiz (who created Maya's memorial service collages, slide show, and tribute video), friends at Ele's Place, Nathaniel Smalls, Cliff Harris and the College for Creative Studies for their tribute to Maya's work in the July exhibit at the Manoogian Visual Resource Center, and still many more. We thank all of you.
