G.P) Opterra

I won't bore you with the details of the Opterra - there are plenty of discussions and videos on the internet. Suffice to say, it is a 2m flying wing that is ideal for FPV, etc., One characteristic that frequently gets mentioned is its habit of 'floating' long distances on landing - once it gets into ground effect it'll float on for ever.

Key spec / changes

  • APM 2.5 Autopilot - Set up as a flying wing. Elevons move in the correct sense, etc., but other settings may need tweaking.
    •    433 KHz data telemetry
    •    Battery monitor
    •    Pitot/static tube probe and sensor (not calibrated)
    •    GPS /magnetometer (to be fixed in place)
  • Runcam camera and 2.4 Ghz transmitter sitting on a 3d-printed mount  (like this)
  • Flysky 2.4 Ghz transmitter (heli/aircraft) and receiver. 
    •    Tx still on its first set of batteries
    •    One switch has lost its retaining ring.
  • Selection of fittings for nose-camera or nosecone
  • 2200 mAh Lipo

  • High intensity LED strobes are fitted top and bottom, controlled from the Tx. These are very bright and intended to make it more visible, to the pilot and to others. Video at (Video)
  • A spare set of mid-span fins are included.
  • The 'ground station' didn't get past the 'experimental' stage and the wiring is a bit of a bodge. An LCD screen is mounted in an old ammo tin containing a LiPo. Two USB outlets are provided. Boscam RX
  • At the moment the video Tx has a helical antenna and the 'ground station' a cloverleaf antenna; ideally, they'd be the same.
  • To assist in achieving the desired c.g., two 3D-printed tools are include. These are detailed A pair of glider airbrakes are installed, set into 3d printed fixings, as detailed here. Video  here
  • There are four small holes on the underside of the fuselage. These are to allow 3D-printed 'pods' to be fixed via the carbon spars. Each carrying a 5500 mAh battery without having to muck about with re-balancing the c of g too much. That'd be a total of 13,200 mAh. (Like this). Gives a high wing-loading but (an as yet untested) range of approx 20 miles.
