I.5) Sound Mirrors

These acoustic mirrors are located near Denge and are under the stewardship of the Romney Marsh Countryside Project. One or two days each year the public are allowed access.

A huge amount of information is available on the internet (e.g., here), which I will not repeat on this page. Suffice to say, there are very interesting sentinels to a long-gone age and technology that didn't see 'its day', let alone have it. To have cast these in-situ must have been quite a task.

30FT SOUND MIRROR
30ft Sound Mirror - the 'microphone' is still in place at the focus of the dish.
20ft Sound Mirror - too small and too low in elevation to be effective.

The rear of the 30' mirror.

200FT SOUND MIRROR

200FT SOUND MIRROR
The 200ft mirror - parabolic in plan, its walls are vertical.

The 200ft mirror has a port at its focal point through which listening equipment would have been placed.
