michael zook

Michael Zook, Director of Choirs, Vandegrift High School, is a native Texan who grew up and attended high school in Kingwood, Texas. He received his Bachelors in Music Education from Texas Tech University in 2003, and Masters in Administrative Leadership from Concordia University in 2015.

After college Michael worked for a church in Klein for 2 years as the Youth Worship Pastor before starting his teaching choir directing career in Spring ISD. He taught Twin Creeks MS for 5 years before moving to Clements High School in Sugarland, Texas. After teaching for 2 years at Clements HS as the Assistant Choir Director, Michael was hired to be the Head Choir Director at Vandegrift High School in 2011.

This is Michael's tenth year as the Head Director of the choir program at Vandegrift High School. In 2016 the VHS Chorale Women's Choir was chosen to sing at TMEA and SWACDA, and National ACDA in 2019.

He is proud to be a Viper and has a genuine love for teaching and singing. He also likes to spend his free time fishing, cooking, eating, leading worship at his home church, and sings with the Conspirare Symphonic Choir in Austin, Texas.

Emily Chandler

Emily Chandler is the newly appointed Associate Director of Choirs at Vandegrift HS. She is so excited to join the Viper Choir Program, which is truly Second to None! Prior to joining the Viper Choir team, Ms. Chandler served as the Director of Choirs at Seven Lakes High School in Katy ISD from 2014-2019. Under her direction, the choirs at SLHS continued their legacy of excellence, artistry and community by earning consistent sweepstakes at UIL Concert and Sight-Reading Evaluation, producing All-State Singers, as well as creating innovative choral programs for the entire Katy community. In 2018, the SLHS Chorale Women, under the director of Ms. Chandler, was an invited choir at the SWACDA Convention in Oklahoma City.

Prior to moving to Texas, Ms. Chandler received a Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting from Northern Arizona University where she was the conductor of the University Singers, Harter M. Memorial Handbell Choir and co-conductor of the Chamber Singers. She was also the assistant conductor for the non-profit community choir, Master Chorale of Flagstaff. Prior to graduate study, Ms. Chandler was the Director of Choirs at Oak-Land Junior High in Stillwater, Minnesota from 2010-2012. Ms. Chandler received her Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from St. Olaf College (Northfield, MN) in 2010, where she served as the student director to Dr. Anton Armstrong and alto section leader for the St. Olaf Choir. She also served as the assistant conductor to Mrs. Sigrid Johnson and The Manitou Singers.

Ms. Chandler is a native South Carolinian who loves to travel and experience new cultures! When she’s not singing or conducting, Ms. Chandler loves to hike and enjoys sharing funny videos of her adorable cat, Peter Pumpkin.
