HSVOAD will host two opportunities for interested volunteers to become acquainted with our diverse organizations: Saturday, September 25, 2010 (10:00 to noon) and Tuesday, September 28, 2010 (6:00 PM to 8:00 PM) at the Catholic Charities, 1822 Keeaumoku St, Honolulu, HI, 96822. HSVOAD had four representatives on the 2:00 PM panel at the Third Annual Hawaii Conference on Language Access on Thursday, Augsut 26, 2010 at the East-West Center. Maria Lutz (ARC), Rich Melendez (AUW 211), Rona Fukumoto (Catholic Charities) and Kevin Bogan (ARRL ARES) discussed unmet needs and the Long Term Recovery Committe, volunteers, Disaster Communications and more. Our own Marsha Tamura (Citizen Corps) was MC for the panel discussion. The take-home message was that we all need to do more to communicate better with those recipients of our servIces who have limited English proficiency (LEP). Check out the OLA website here.
November 9, 2009: HSVOAD partner, Citizen Corps, was at the Asia Pacific Homeland Security Summit & Exposition. Marsha Tamura of the Hawaii State Civil Defense (also, a licensed Amateur Radio operator, WH7IG) hosted Kevin Bogan, AH6QO, ARES emcomm and Sze Pui Cheng of the partner agency, Medical Reserve Corps to participate in the exposition associated with the Community Response Exercise (CRE). Kevin and Sze Pui fielded many questions from the public and event participants. They discussed how HSVOAD member agencies prepare for and respond to disasters.
On November 30, 2009, HSVOAD member agency, ARRL/ARES was at the IEEE GLOBECOM GEOSS Workshop XXXII Mitigation and Management of Disasters through Communications.
The workshop was held at the Hilton Hawaiian Village where Kevin Bogan, AH6QO, presented "Amateur Radio Communications for Sustaining Communications Post Disasters." Kevin hit home the point, "When all else fails, Ham Radio works."
11/18/09 HSVOAD met at The Salvation Army's Wai'oli Tea Room for the Board of Director's meeting at which the Chair and Secretary were elected. Maria Lutz, American Red Cross, will serve another year as Chair. Tammie Sills, Pacific Health Ministry, Director of Operations, will serve as Secretary for 2010.
