1.Introduction; What is the greenhouse effect? How does the amount of the greenhouse gas in the atmosphere affect the temperature of the Earth? Where are the increased amounts of greenhouse gas originating from? Perform the following activities to gain a better understanding of the greenhouse effect and global warming.
The greenhouse effect is a process by which thermal radiation from a planetary surface is absorbed by atmospheric greenhouse gases, and is re-radiated in all directions. Since part of this re-radiation is back towards the surface and the lower atmosphere, it results in an elevation of the average surface temperature above what it would be in the absence of the gases
2. Materials for the demo are Lamp or other light source, with bulb 150 watts or higher; Permanent Marker; Pipets, 3;Plastic-Backed; Scissors; Rule, Straws, 3; Stoppers, One-hole; String, 6 inch pieces, 3; Thermometers; 15: twist ties, 2 and 3 clamp stands
3.Procedures :
1. First get a 6 inch piece of string and tie it to the clamp than get the other end of the string and tie it to the thermometer
2. Next you get a plastic bottle and a cap, than you get the another 6 inch string and tie to the cap, after that you that to tie it to the thermometer, put the thermometer in the bottle and close the top, than you close the clamp on the top of the bottle
3 .Repeat step 2 but you have to put a black piece of paper be hide the thermometer, once inside.
4. After that you put all 3 clamp stands, next to each other.
5.Finally, you put the lamp facing all of them than wait 20 minutes, after that you record the results.
4. Safety Precautions: The dilute solution sodium hydroxide solution used in this activity is irritating to skin and eyes. Avoid contact of all chemicals with eyes and skin. Wear chemical slash goggles, chemical-resistant gloves, and a chemical-resistant apron. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before leaving the laboratory.
