ORR - Guidance on Minor Railways

Text is a series of guidance notes for minor railways, those that may be on private land, of low line speed, including Heritage Railways. Notes are of a general nature that cover a broad range of railway track and infrastructure topics.

The document contains a chapter on Guidance for Track which details the function of different aspects of the permanent way, including the use of ballast, the function of check rails etc.

A useful document as it is not prescriptive, rather gives guidelines that if adhered to would be sufficient to ensure the safe running of a railway.

Useful for the students to get a feel for such a document however it is too vague to be of any real use for a comparison of what is to be produced in a handbook for Heritage Railways.
