Red Riding Hat
When you look at this photo, can you tell that
Zhen's hat is made out of a sock? And do you care (in a good way)? If you
answered "yes" to both questions, and would like to know how to make one (or
two), you're in luck! 'Cause tomorrow I shall post a handy-dandy sewing guide
for people to follow! By the way, the only thing Zhen's wearing that I
didn't make are her stock boots and the tee of unknown origins (it came
in a toy Beetle VW from a thrift store). The socks are made from leftover...
well, sock (leftover from the hat, naturally). The skirt is made from a vintage
(and when I say vintage, I mean actual real Victorian) fabric and lace. My
former professor who was in charge of Drexel U.'s historical dress collection
gave me a piece of disintegrating yellowed lace-and-pleated-black-velvet
something that used to be part of a lady's underwear-y things... not sure what
it was (hey, it wasn't on the syllabus!). I used to help out with the costume
collection, and so we were on pretty friendly terms, and so she used to give me
stuff she didn't think she could use. The lace thingamy is VERY pretty, but for
9 years I had no idea what to do with it. Until, of course, my Momokos made
inspections of my fabric closet and ordered some hot clothes to be made.
176/365: The obligatory peg shot
So I finally have my hands on an f1.8, 50mm
nifty fifty. Still hardly able to walk, I wandered into the back garden
for this shot. Lots of people seem to take a shot just like this to play with
the crazy DoF that a 1.8 is capable of. Mine's mediocre, but I wanted to use my
first nifty fifty shot. I like how the white sheet melts into the white house,
leaving a plain white background. The lens itself is cheapness personified -
light, cheap feeling plastic and a noise like a wind-up tin Victorian toy when
it auto focusses, but I knew all of this before making the purchase. It's great
so far, but I am looking forward to feeling well enough to taking it out.
