How Good is URCS?

A project at Brown University put together some statistics on computer science departments.  They came up with a ranking of CS departments by the number of their PhD graduates who went on to be become faculty members at a top-50 CS department.  (They used the US News top 50 list, which is flawed but fine for this exercise.)  Rochester does pretty well on that list, but it becomes really interesting when when the number of professors graduated is divided by the faculty size - the original researchers did not do that, but we did.  Berkeley is by far the most productive, with a faculty-production ratio of 5.5484.  Stanford, MIT, Cal Tech, Princeton have ratios in the range 2.4712 - 2.2188.

Rochester is #15, with a ratio of 0.9444.  This is better than CMU, which has a ratio of 0.8841 (!).  We are comfortably above many well known schools, both large (Georgia Tech: 0.5208) and relatively small (Johns Hopkins 0.4865).

Attached is the chart.  The original data comes from http://cs.brown.edu/people/alexpap/faculty_dataset.html
