This week we have had this lovely medium sized Howard Bridgewater armchair come in for restoration, as you will see one of the seat rails was broken.
It needed to be fully stripped to fix the broken rail and replace the rotten hessian.
Broken Rail, broken at the mortice joint, also split down the center.
Also note the condition of the legs they will need a slight spruce up.
After repair:
A new piece of beech has been cut and halved into the existing rail, with a tenon joint cut in the new beech to joint it to the leg.
We have also added corner blocks for extra stability, something we do to our frames as standard. I am not sure why Howard did not do this themselves, perhaps they thought such a small item would not need it.
The Front rail was also twisted so that had to be played with, I am not sure if it was the twist which caused the break or the twist was caused by the break.
The legs after their spruce up look much better while still retaining their character.
