HPS Presents: Back to basics: What do psychoanalysts (think they) know? Presented by Gregory Graham, M.D. Wednesday, February 8, 2017 | 7:00-9:00PM 7:00 Networking | 7:30 Presentation (1.5 CEUs) The Council on Recovery - Houston 303 Jackson Hill St Houston, TX 77007 This event is free and open to the public. Free parking on the north side of the building. In the spirit of this year’s theme for the Psychoanalytic Society’s scientific meetings “back to basics.” Dr. Graham will present a personal narrative of some fundamental vertices of clinical knowledge which have been highlighted in psychoanalytic models of the mind developed during the twentieth century. Newer approaches drawing on Bion’s thought and contemporary Field Theory will be introduced as representing ways in which analysts are now exploring the clinical usefulness of considering “how thinking comes into being” in contrast to “interpreting what we know.” Clinical examples will be presented to illustrate developments in the field. Objectives:
Gregory D. Graham, MD is currently a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Center for Psychoanalytic Studies, Houston and a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Baylor College of Medicine. He studied modern European Philosophy as an undergraduate at the University of California, Santa Cruz and received his MD degree from the University of Erlangen Nuremberg in Germany. He completed a residency in psychiatry and did psychoanalytic training in Houston. He has served as a clinician, educator, consultant, supervisor and writer nationally and internationally for over 30 years. He maintains a busy clinical practice in Houston. His long-standing interests range from the subtleties of psychotherapy and religion, psychosomatic medicine and comparative psychoanalytic models of the mind to the careful consideration of developmentally supportive and/or restorative “therapeutic” approaches to trouble experienced on the horizons of dreaming, thinking, creativity and communication. Recently he has been exploring how knowing, truth, responsibility and thinking itself first appear in the inner world, develop or go awry. Experiences too unfamiliar, unformed or affectively energized to hold in mind, experiences that have been intolerable or too dangerous to share and experiences that are prevented from joining a “conversation in mutuality” are central in this field of interest. This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of American Psychoanalytic Association and The Center for Psychoanalytic Studies. The American Psychoanalytic Association is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.” IMPORTANT DISCLOSURE INFORMATION FOR ALL LEARNERS: None of the planners and presenters of this CME program have any relevant financial relationships to disclose.
