DRIVERS SET TO HIT TRACK WITH HEAVY HEARTS IN HONOR OF JERRY SCHILD

When the drivers at Houston Motorsports Park take the green flag on Saturday, August 18, it will be with a heavy heart after one of their own was killed recently in a tragic shooting.

Jerry Schild, driver of the No. 1 in the NASCAR Fiesta Modified division this season, was allegedly killed on Saturday, by a co-worker while working on a pipeline in North Dakota.

HMP will dedicate its Whelen NASCAR Night to Schild, who had made just two starts this season and was 31st in points. The drivers in the NASCAR Fiesta Modified class will be racing in a pair of Jerry Schild 40s.

Jerry Schild was a racers racer,” said John Mandabach, vice president and general manager at Houston Motorsports Park. “Jerry was an outstanding driver who competed at NASCAR's highest level in the 70s, but he was an even better person. There is no doubt that he will be missed around here by everybody – racers, fans and track personnel.”

The night will also include double features in all three NASCAR classes, as well as a Bounty Bonus of $1,000 for anyone that can beat David Webster in the NASCAR Stock Car class.

The night will also see the return of 2011 NASCAR Fiesta Modified champion Zak Hausler, as he will battle current points leader Joe Aramendia and the rest of the field for the victory in both features.

This should be the best night of racing we have had this season,” Mandabach said. “With Hausler coming back, as well as the Bounty Bonus alive in the NASCAR Stock Car class, I am predicting fireworks from the drop of the first green flag of the night to the wave of the night's final checkered flag.”

Tickets are available for $12 at the track, with ladies getting in for just $1 and children 12 and under still free. And, as always, there will be $1 hot dogs, $1 cokes and $1 beer.

Gates open at 5 p.m. Racing is set to begin at 7 p.m.

HMP is a state of the art complex, situated in a park like setting inside Beltway 8, on the North-East side of Houston, only 20 minutes from downtown and 20 minutes from Bush Intercontinental Airport.
