FIRST NIGHT OF HOLIDAY CLASSIC A THRILLER
Night one of the Annual Holiday Hockey Tournament at the SDC was a thriller, as both Semi-Final Games were decided in overtime. The Gremlins beat the Soo Blue Devils in the second overtime on a goal by Aaron Kolehmainen with assists going to Hunter Rajala and Trevor Mattson. Tony Peltier was the player of the game stopping over 35 shots and only allowing one goal. Ray Brice scored the other goal for Houghton in the first period. The Gremlins will face off tonight at 8 against the Bulldogs of Hancock, who pulled off an overtime upset of the Calumet Copper Kings in the second semi-final game on Tuesday. The Gremlins have not won the tournament since 2003 and will look to end that drought tonight!
 
Houghton Improves to 6-1-0
The Gremlins beat the North Harrison Flyers 5-1 Friday night at Dee Stadium behind two goals and an assist from Connor Hannon, who returned to the lineup from injury.  Jed Kallio also scored and Heath Johnson and Ray Brice each had a goal and an assist.   Griffin Heitala, Seth Kaarto, Mike McLean and Hunter Rajala picked up an assist each.  Tony Peltier had a strong game stopping 34 shots for the Orange and Black.  Houghton was 3 for 6 on the Power Play and killed 6 of 7 penalties.  They will face off Tuesday Night against Northland Pines at the Dee.

Gremlins outman the Bulldogs
In the first of at least three rivalry matchups this season, Houghton beat Hancock 5-1 on Tuesday at the Houghton County Arena. Behind a two goal night from Mike McLean and 23 saves by Tony Peltier, the Gremlins grinded their way to a key victory. Aaron Kolehmainen, Casey Markham, and Austin Erva also scored for the Orange and Black. Griffin Hietala, Erva, and Peltier picked up helpers, while Trevor Mattson had two assists. Zach Hill scored for the Bulldogs and Devin Kero had 33 saves on the night.
 
Rivalry Starts Tonight
The greatest rivalry in Copper Country sports kicks off tonight in the young high school hockey season.  The Houghton Gremlins will take on the Hancock Bulldogs at the Houghton County Arena at 7pm in the first of at least 3 meetings of the season. 
 
Weekend Split at Rick Miller Classic

The Gremlins split the weekend against the Traverse City Teams, beating TC West 2-1 on Friday but falling to TC Central 4-3 on Saturday.  On Friday, Houghton outshot the Titans 43-13 but didn't find the back of the net until 3:41 left in the game and then again with 1:31 left to get the win.  Jed Kallio had a goal and an assist.  Aaron Kolehmainen also scored for the Gremlins.  on Saturday at the Houghton County Arena, the Trojans beat the Gremlins despite Houghton putting 14 shots on goal in the 3rd period.  Connor Hannon had a goal and an assist.  Ray Brice and Trevor Mattson also tallied in the game.  Tony Peltier had 42 saves on the weekend.

 
 
Gremlins to take on a pair of Traverse City Teams
The Houghton High School Hockey Team will take on Traverse City West and Traverse City Central this weekend.  Friday Night's Game will be at 7:00PM at Dee Stadium against the TC West Titans.  Saturday's Game will be at 4:30PM at the Houghton County Arena against the Trojans of TC Central.  These games are all part of the Rick Miller Classic.
