Guruvayoor/Guruvayur is a small town in Thrissur district in the Indian state of Kerala. It lies 28 km to the north west of Thrissur, the cultural capital of Kerala.

Guruvayur is most famous for its temple, which is many centuries old and one of the most important in Kerala. The temple's deity is Lord Guruvayurappan.

The historic scripts tells that the idol was worshipped by Lord SreeKrishna himself, during the time dwaparayuga. Before the 'Mahapralaya' (The great flood at the end of dwaparayugam), Lord SreeKrishna adviced his foremost disciple Udhava to reinstall the idol of Lord Vishnu which he had installed at Dwaraka. The place was to be chosen by Guru Brihaspathi. According to the advice of Siva, Brihaspathy (the Teacher of Devas) and Vayu (the God of Wind) performed the installation of the idol here. Hence the name 'Guru''Vayu'r ('ur'/'oor' means town). The temple of Lord Siva (Mammiyoor Temple) and Goddess Durga are also present here. So, differently from the other great temples in India, the greatness of which owe to their antiquity, history or the rich and Devine sculptures in them, Guruvayoor owes its Mahathmya to the divinity of thelocality.

The temple is famous as a site for pilgrimage and also a cultural centre as it is one of the centre-points along which Kerala literature and art-forms have been developed. Non-Hindus are not permitted to enter the temple.
