HOTEL de VILLE 612.423.3653

The Empire Room restaurant is closed for the season.  The hotel is open and there are several dining options within a short walking distance of the hotel.  Thank You for another spectacular season!

Where we offer you the romance of the South of France...

without the attitude

Located in the heart of Main Street Alma, Wisconsin, the Hotel de Ville  provides a great get-away for anyone with an appreciation for the history and flavor of an authentic river town. At the same time, at least a dozen of the old buildings of the National Historic District house a variety of fascinating galleries showcasing local artists work that caters to contemporary, even cutting edge, taste.  A variety of restaurants will be found within easy walking distance on either side of the hotel along with several bars and the Big River Theatre. The tourism boards website at www.explorealma.com will detail the many shops of town.

The Hotel de Ville is proud that its many rooms and  five multi bedroom suites offer river views as one of tis four buildings is actually on the river. We offer check in 24 hours a day and have banquet facilities and the coffee shop available during our extended summer season. Parking is plentiful at this end of town and both on street and off street parking are available.

If you do feel that you can not afford the Hotel de Ville, even though complete suites can start at $70.00,  do stop by the hotel or Fire and Ice, our ice cream and coffee shop, which acts as our hotel lobby and ask for a tour of an open suite as thousands of visitors to Alma have done over the years.  The history of the town, the buildings and the interiors are all part of the free tour.  The two gardens of the hotel have been on TV.  One features almost 200 varieties of Hosta while the secret garden boasts fountains and life sized bronzes, terraced walls 24 feet high and a castle wall with a Hobbit door for good measure.

All five suites hold one of a kind treasures, like signed  french  Mene bronzes, signed Salvador Dali artworks, a chandelier from a Vanderbilt mansion, mirrors and bombe chests from the old Sheridan Ritz Hotel in Minneapolis or the like.  There are over 1,200 crystal prisms on the chandeliers in the hallways and hotel rooms of the building we call the Grand.  I assure you, this is not the kind of thing you will ever see elsewhere, I promise.  Our desire was to create an experience for our treasured guests who we see so often. The Hotel de Vile is truly a destination hotel both because it is comfortable and elegant and because it is ever changing as the creation of the hotel is ongoing.

Four fully restored historic buildings, built in 1861, 1867-1869, and 1938, located at or near 305 North Main Street, make up the hotel.  The Grand builiding is the oldest brick building in Alma and is on the National Historic Register.  It was the final stopping point in the days when the paddle boats could go no further up the Mississippi River than Alma.

The Hotel de Ville offers old world charm with our meticulous attention to saving every bit of the original living quarters as possible, while providing you with amenities unavailable to the early residents of the buildings including  luxury linens, completely up to date private bathrooms, air conditioning, renovated full kitchens, wifi, and flat screen televisions for our DVD collection.  Cable TV is available in the rooms of the Grand. and WiFi is available throughout the hotel. Don't forget that all of the Hotel bedrooms have quality queen or king size pillow top mattresses which is not at all the norm in a small town like Alma!

We are sure you will love our secret garden as well, complete with bronze sculptures and fountains, located behind the main hotel building. It has been on television several times and is one of our huge draws.  You'll love the castle wall enclosing the secret garden and the hobbit house there as well.  The garden was featured on The Wisconsin Gardener TV show and in BIG RIVER Magazine in June of 2015 as well. Guests love watching the eagles soaring outside their own window with the binoculars provided in most rooms.

We are thrilled that after 13 years most of our guests have returned again and again.  Some have made it a regular quick vacation retreat and stop in to relax every few months during our season.  Some have chosen a favorite suite, while others try a new one each time they visit us. The Hotel de Ville is in a class of its own.
