Workshop description:

The 3D community continues to innovate and evolve, with greater focus on enabling virtual augmented and mixed reality (VR/AR/MR) experiences. There have been amazing breakthroughs on the capture and acquisition in recent years, with the introduction of microlens camera arrays and the growing momentum behind large-scale multi-camera arrays, as well as 360-degree video and depth sensing devices. Display technology continues to advance as the emergence of head-mounted displays gain in popularity. The widespread increase in computational power – including powerful GPUs – has allowed an ever-increasing realism in 3D scene generation. Additionally, 3D audio has the potential to add to the immersive experience through surround sound and higher-order ambisonic sound field rendering. It is clear that recent trends in AR/VR applications have further accelerated research and innovations in 3D.

All these factors together create an environment prone for an explosion of related technology and applications, with a speed of development that will not fit in the slower cycle of traditional conferences and journals. In other words, while appropriate venues for presenting research at advanced stages are plentiful, the 3D multimedia community needs also an appropriate venue for receiving feedback during early or initial stages of the development of radically new and potentially disruptive technologies. This is exactly the void that Hot3D tries to fill and what differentiates the workshop from the other established scientific events in the field of 3D (e.g. 3DTV-CON, 3DV, 3DSA).

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
  • 3D Acquisition: microlens arrays, multi-camera, depth sensing, holography
  • 3D Representation: light fields, point clouds, meshes, holography
  • 3D Processing: filtering, stereo, calibration, registration
  • 3D Compression: functionalities (scalability, random access, error resilience, etc.) and tools (transforms, prediction, quantization, etc.) 
  • 3D Rendering: modeling, synthesis, surface reconstruction
  • 3D Display: free viewpoint, multiview, head-mounted, holographic
  • 3D Quality: objective metrics, subjective methodologies, user experience issues
  • 3D Application Scenarios: requirements, functionalities, experiences
