2020 Regatta Results

Press Release:

The 25th --Silver Anniversary-- Hospice Turkey Shoot Regatta, (HTSR) was held on the Rappahannock River off Irvington Oct. 3rd.

The 25th or Silver Anniversary Hospice Turkey Shoot Regatta, one of the largest regattas on the Southern Bay and the largest of the Hospice regattas, was held off Irvington under blue skies, scattering clouds and variable winds. Only a one-day, pursuit style sail race this year, but a great race, it attracted 82 of the area’s finest sailors—with one each from Greenwich, CT and Toronto, Canada-- in their diverse and often handsome boats, making it exciting for many as well as a beautiful panorama of boats and sails across the expanse of the Rappahannock River above the Norris Bridge.

With forecasted northerly winds of 10-15 knots and 65º F, boats met on the water to challenge the 10-mile planned course, with its pre-set “rabbit” start at 1100. Boats sailed in reverse rating order, i.e., “slower” boats, based upon their race ratings (PHRF- performance handicap racing fleet), starting first followed by increasingly faster boats until the fastest rated entry started. With that adjusted start, the winning boat is the first across the finish line. An exciting finish is expected as the boats often converge on the finish line at the same time.

But the winds lightened, then shifted, creating large “holes” with little air, slowing groups of boats at points on the course, forcing many to adjust sails and tactics until wind returned. Then as an 8-10 kn easterly breeze filled in the early afternoon, the final leg upwind became a tacking battle, with finishers sometimes dueling in pairs and triples, up to the finish line, crossing at acute angles, often just seconds apart. who

On to the results. First Place went to Timothy Scheid on L’eaudanse who will have his and the boat name engraved on the Virginia Spirit Trophy and receive a free room and slip for next year’s Regatta, courtesy of The Tides Inn.
