To create a prominent interdisciplinary network for engaging, connecting, developing and supporting postdoctoral fellows historically underrepresented in the sciences.
DPAC is an interdisciplinary and postdoc-run sub-committee of JHPDA dedicated to enhancing the academic, professional, and social development of underrepresented individuals in higher education by systematically identifying and addressing their needs and concerns.
DPAC supports a variety of objectives through its initiatives [add link to pdf of goals].
- To provide a formal support system to individuals from groups historically underrepresented in science.
- To encourage and support diversity in the sciences and among postdoctoral fellows at JHU. This will be accomplished by a variety of opportunities, including:
- To articulate and promote the unique challenges, needs and goals of underrepresented postdoctoral fellows and effect change (where needed) in the postdoctoral community.
- To increase the participation of underrepresented postdoctoral fellows in cultural, educational and social activities through the use of timely dissemination of information, print and electronic bulletin boards, social media and direct outreach.
- To develop personal and professional relationships, mentoring, and networking by implementation of an internal mentoring network of underrepresented faculty, postdocs and grad students
- Diversity Speaker Series. To provide an opportunity for talented underrepresented postdoctoral fellows and faculty (inside and outside of JHU SOM) to gain exposure and present their work at JHU SOM.
- Leadership Fellowship and Travel Award. To formulate a highly competitive NIH standard fellowship and travel award for underrepresented postdoctoral fellows at JHU SOM.
- Mentoring Network Family. To construct a network of support for minority individuals at the three critical career stages (graduate student, postdoctoral fellow, and faculty) of academic science.
- Journal Club and Town Hall Meeting [add link to Spring meeting Agenda pdf] To provide information on diversity in the sciences and to provide an avenue to discuss challenges that underrepresented individuals in the sciences here at Hopkins may be facing.
DPAC holds bi-yearly social community building events as well as partnering with other diversity groups such as: Black Residents and Postdocs (BRAP) the Biomedical Scholars Association (BSA), Black Graduate Students Association (BGSA), Student National Medical Association (SNMA), Graduate Women’s Empowerment Network (GWEN), and others.
