Basic Benefits

This page has been created to provide you with information regarding policies on salary, vacation, sick leave etc for fellows. At the bottom, we have included a series of pdfs from the Registrar's Office that you can download, however, we also recommend that you explore the Registrar's website for the most accurate information.

Salary

All School of Medicine postdocs should be paid at least the NIH (National Institutes of Health) NRSA (National Research Service Award) minimum salary adjusted for years of postdoctoral experience. The NIH rate changes from time to time and JHPDA will update you when this happens. JHMI policy regarding your wage and current rates are found on the Registrar's website

Go to Vacation Policies and Salary for Postdoctoral Fellows to download the pdf (*updated to 2013-2014).

Vacation

Postdocs get 2-4 weeks off per year (at the discretion of the training program director).

Public holidays throughout the year: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day

Sick/Maternity Leave

Postdocs are given 8 weeks Maternity leave in any rolling 12 month period with full salary and benefits for the duration of leave. This can be extended for up to 12 weeks under Family and Medical Leave; however, those additional 4 weeks are not necessarily paid. Maternity + Sick leave can not exceed 12 weeks in any year.

If more leave is necessary, postdocs have disability insurance. On a personal level, you should talk with your PI and work something out; some advisors / research are more flexible than others, especially when it comes to working from home vs. being physically in the lab.

For adoption leave, new parents are given 1 week following the adoption of the child, and the primary caregiver an addition 5 weeks of paid adoption leave (for a total of 6 weeks).

For detailed information use the "Maternity/Paternity/Adoption leave for fellows" form.

Retirement Savings

Postdocs are encouraged to make pretax contributions to a 403b savings plan

Only postdocs paid a wage are eligible to contribute to the 403b retirement plans. Those paid by stipend are not eligible under current Internal Revenue Service (IRS) regulations.

To enroll visit the registrar in room 147, Broadway Research Building (BRB).
There is no University salary matching for retirement contributions.
Hopkins offers financial/retirement/savings seminars from time to time.
