Current Activities

                                       Fall 2014 Latin Dancing Social

To celebrate the recent conclusion of our Fall Latin Dance Lessons, we will be holding a Latin Dancing Social on Homewood campus this Saturday November 15th 8:00 - 11:00 PM in the Great Hall Levering Hall. There will be a brief 30-minute warm up which will refresh you on the basics of Salsa and Bachata. Then we will put on music and you can dance to your heart's desire. We will play Salsa, Bachata, Cha Cha and some Rumba music. This is a great opportunity to practice all you learned with others from the class. Come out and show off your moves! The event is completely FREE and open to everyone!

Also, remember that the second Country 2-step Lesson will be tomorrow night at 7 PM in the Daily Grind Café (3rd floor of the Ross Research Building on the Medical Campus).

                         Fall 2014 Beginner Country Couples Dance Lessons

Hopkins Dance Club will be hosting FREE BeginnerCountry Couples Dance Lessons starting this Tuesday 11/4 on the Medical campus, sponsored by the GSA.  Learn how to get your country lean on!  The lessons are completely FREE for graduate students (and $5 per person per lesson for all others).  There is no experience or partner required.  There is no registration either - just show up!  Everyone is welcome.  Here are the details:

Fall 2014 Beginner Salsa Lessons

Hi everyone and welcome to a new school year! To get you started off on the right foot, Hopkins Dance Club will be hosting 3-weeks of beginner Salsa Dance lessons on the Homewood Campus* starting next Thursday evening Sept 4th at 6:00 PM in the Levering Hall Glass Pavilion (details below). There is no experience or partner required – and everyone is welcome! Lessons will be taught by professional instructor Niss Albaig of SalsaNow. There is no registration; simply show up with your student ID. The lessons are FREE for graduate students (and $5 per lesson for non-graduate students).

Advanced Salsa Lessons

Hey everybody!  Hopkins Dance Club will be hosting 3 Advanced SalsaDance lessons on the Medical Campus* starting next Thursday, April 17th at 6:30 PM.  If you have taken our salsa lessons in the past, or have any outside salsa experience, this is your chance to learn fun new moves.  Each week will cover a different combination of moves, so the lessons are NOT progressive.  Lessons will be taught by professional instructor Niss Albaig of SalsaNow.  There is no registration; simply show up with your graduate student ID (or $5).

When: Thursdays, April 17th, April 24th, May 1st, 6:30 – 8:00 PM

FREE Beginner Hip Hop Lessons!

 Hey everybody!  Hopkins Dance Club will be hosting 5-weeks of beginner Hip Hop lessons on the Medical Campus* starting on Thursday 2/20 at 7:30 PM.  Lessons will be taught by instructors Ken Estrellas and Cynthia Chavez of Baltimore Dance Crews Project (http://www.baltimoredcp.org/about.html).  There is NO experience required.  Everyone/anyone is welcome!  Each week Ken and Cynthia will teach a new suite of moves/styles.  The last week they will put everything together into a mini routine.  The best part is: it’s completely FREE for graduate students!!!  There is no registration; simply show up with your graduate student ID (or $5 if you are not a grad student).  Here’s the details:

When: Thursdays, Feb 20th – Mar 20th7:30 – 8:30 PM

Where: Daily Grind (Medical Campus - Ross Research Bldg 3rd floor) - section 2H on the medical campus map

Cost: FREE for graduate students (with valid graduate student ID), $5 per lesson for all others (undergraduates, postdocs, staff, alumni, non-JHU community members, etc.)

Attire recommendations: wear comfortable, loose clothes that are easy to move in and comfortable shoes / sneakers.

Salsa & Swing Dancing Social w/ Performances!

Hey everybody!  Hopkins Dance Club will be hosting a night of Salsa and Swing social dancing on Saturday evening Oct 26th on Homewood campus.*  There will also be performances by the first ever Hopkins Dance Club performance team!!! 

 

What:  Salsa & Swing Dancing Social w/ Performances

When: Saturday October 26th, 8:00 PM – 11:00 PM (performances9:30 – 9:45 PM)

Where: Levering Hall Great Hall (Homewood campus – bldg. 40 oncampus map)

Cost:  FREE!

Attire:  dress nice and wear comfortable shoes that are easy to dance in (flip flops are not recommended).

If you have attended our Salsa and/or Swing lessons in the past (or you have any outside Salsa/Swing experience), this is a great opportunity to practice, show off your moves, meet new people and watch some beautiful performances.  There will be a brief introduction / warm-up to each of the dances at the beginning (~15 minutes each).  Then, we will alternate between playing Salsa and Swing music.  There is no partner necessary, and we encourage everyone to mingle.  Best of all, it’s completely FREE for everyone!

* For those of you coming from the Medical campus or School of Public Health, there is a free shuttle that runs hourly between the Medical and Homewood campuses until 1 AM.

Square Dancing Social 

Hey everybody! Hopkins Dance Club will be hosting a night of Square Dancing on Friday evening Oct 18th. Professional caller Shane Knudsen will call moves to the lively music of Brad Kolodner (banjo, fiddle, guitar), Ken Kolodner (fiddle, hammered dulcimer) and Alex Lacquement (bass). At the beginning, Shane will go over some of the terminology and explain the basic moves. There is no experience or partner necessary, so everyone is welcome! Free snacks and refreshment provided too. Here is an example of a square dance night to get you excited:

Hopkins Dance Club is teaming up with Pulse Dance Club and the MMI student group to bring you a night of Swing and Salsa dance next Wednesday evening (Dec 4th) at 6:30 PMon the Medical campus.  This event is FREE and open to everyone.  Plus, there is no experience or partner required!  Come unwind and hang out with friends before the holidays.  See the attached flyer for details.

 Hey everybody!  Hopkins Dance Club will be hosting 6-weeks of beginner Salsa Dance lessons on the Medical Campus on Wednesday evenings.  There will be 3 weeks of standard (slot) Salsa followed by 3 weeks of (circular) Rueda de Casino Salsa.  No experience or partner required!  Lessons will be taught by professional instructor Niss Albaig of SalsaNow.  For those of you on Homewood campus, there is a free shuttle that goes to the Medical campus every 15-20 minutes: (http://www.parking.jhu.edu/shuttles_jhmi_homewood.html).  Everyone is welcome!

Salsa Styling Workshop

What: Salsa Styling Workshop (for Men and Women)
When: Sunday (April 21st) 2-3:30pm
Where: SDS room in the Mattin Building (Homewood Campus)
Cost: FREE for graduate students - $5 for all others
Hey everybody! Hopkins Dance Club will be hosting a Salsa Styling workshop this Sunday.  If you have taken a beginner Salsa series and you want to learn some styling techniques, you will love this workshop taught by our own Club President, Alexi Russell!  Whether you are an advanced-beginner or a seasoned dancer, whether you are a guy or a girl, you will really benefit from this workshop which will teach you how to move your torso and shoulders to make your dancing more fluid.  At the end of the workshop, you will learn a mini styling routine that you can use at social dances.

Argentine Tango Social
Roger Peterson, our Tango instructor, held a special milonga (social) for our group on Thursday at the Homewood Friends Meeting House on Homewood
Campus. We encourage everyone to go. 


Argentine Tango lessons
Keep warm this winter by learning to dance Tango with Instructors Roger Peterson and Claire Braswell from Tango Esta Noche (www.tangoestanoche.com). Hopkins Dance Club will be hosting 6 weekly progressive-Beginner lessons.
