Background

New World First Bus (NWFB) was established on 1 Sept 1998 to substitute the provision of franchised bus service previously by China Motor Bus on Hong Kong Island. It is the third largest bus company in Hong Kong, with services across Hong Kong Island and Kowloon Peninsula.

NWFB was owned by both New World Development and First Bus from Scotland when it was first established in 1998. When NWFB was awarded a 5-year franchise from the Hong Kong government, the company promptly introduced new buses comprising Dennis Trident and Dennis Dart SLF. Its fleet also incorporated a number of ex-CMB buses which have subsequently undergone comprehensive refurbishment. In the early 21st century, NWFB also continued to acquire a wide variety of new buses, ranging from Volvo Super Olympian to Neoplan Centroliner and Dennis Enviro 500. In 2003, Citybus, the major franchise bus company competitor on the Hong Kong Island was purchased by NWS holdings. Both companies then became under joint coordination and facilitated easy re-organization of routes to enjoy minimization of resource redundancy.

In 2000, NWFB received its franchise for new routes in Tsueng Kwan O South. Two years later, NWFB operated an array of new routes (701,702 etc.) in the new West Kowloon Reclamation District.
