"Exploring Space" Chestnut-Backed Chickadee Wrapped in Vine Maple at Mundy Park in Coquitlam BC 09May2010
"Without negative space how would we appreciate the positive in our art and in our lives?" --Dyan Law A Chestnut-backed Chicadee (Poecile atricapillus) peers from a well-foliated vine maple (Acer circinatum) branch. Like a vessel flitting from world to world, this bird thoroughly explored leaves and twigs for insect tidbits. The feathered animal energetically responded to, and interacted with its surroundings in a very intimate fashion. Without the environment, what would the chickadee have been doing? What is a bird without the environment in which it lives? Is the vine maple negative or positive space? Is a bird always the positive subject? Why does it seem like so many photographers strive to eliminate the landscape in which birds and other animals live? As a North American artist, why should I conform to traditional European artistic ideals about nature as a mere backdrop for the subject (usually human), essentially portraying nature as something that is essentially static? The bird and tree exist together, and there is a lovely harmony of form between the two. Notice the triangular forms on the chickadee, the pointy leaves and the dichotomously branched twigs. As the wind blew, both subjects moved with a steady rhythm: The bird and the tree limb acted as one. These life forms are dynamic and interesting in their own ways. They interact and change over time. They defy stasis.
The Strange Creature From Planet X
The Strange Creature From Planet X
Deeply buried in an unmarked planet in the far reaches of the universe, space explorers came across this bizarre creature emerging from the ground! This was the last recorded image of their transmission before it all went to static...has it been awoken? Is it heading for Earth? Ok, here it is; what I consider to be my masterwork, at least so far, in the realm of abstract art creation. As you can see from the original photo I posted below (which was taken last November), I took the editing on this one quite far, and really pushed the envelope. To get a real feel for just how many layers and how much overall editing went into this work than my average photo, let me break it down for you this way; after editing, most of my photos I can save as the very highest quality with 5 layers of progressive scans and they will usually save at between 15 to 20 megabytes. When I went to save this creation, with the usual highest quality settings, it was SIXTY SEVEN POINT FIVE (67.5) megabytes! Very much larger indeed! So I had to save it at a fairly lower, but still very good, quality setting. Anyways, I would love to know what you all think of this one!
