Unit studies also called integrated studies or thematic studies is a method of homeschooling that integrates several subjects, like history, science, geography, art, Bible or theology and sometimes math around the context of one topical theme, time period, historical event, character, character trait, piece of literature or person.

The following teaching methods are used for this approach:

  • Several subjects are taught at once.
  • Subjects are taught around the context of a single, broad theme.
  • Children of all ages are taught together.
  • Each child is given age-appropriate assignments that relate to the topic.
  • Teaching is usually done in the morning.
  • Afternoons are usually reserved for hands on projects or field trips.
